SPRINGFIELD | Run-punt option or scramble punt? Call it what you want, but after Belton’s Zach Rasmussen slithered through the Springfield Glendale defense for a 48-yard touchdown run on a fourth-and-5 play during the first series of the game, he’d call it making a statement.
“You watch them on tape, but you don’t know what to expect, how fast they are or how slow they are,” said Rasmussen, a senior quarterback and punter. “We wanted to send a message.”
Rasmussen led Belton to scores on its first five drives, showcasing his athletic ability in Friday night’s 41-12 Missouri Class 5 quarterfinal victory over Glendale at JFK Stadium. He rushed five times for 169 yards — including an impressive 81-yard second-half touchdown run — and completed six of 13 passes for 154 yards.
He set up first-and-goal situations off of his passes or runs three times in the first half. Fullback Casey Lewis was the benefactor, cashing in three touchdown runs (2, 1 and 8 yards) and Jake Paxton had a 2-yard touchdown run. Lewis finished with 10 carries for 45 yards.
Benefiting from playing in the Pirates’ nickel package, Rasmussen also had an impressive second-half interception on his own 2, gracefully dragging his feet as his momentum carried him out of bounds.
Glendale started its backup quarterback, Joey Mendel, unsure whether starter Kevin Redmon could go after suffering a knee injury last week. Mendel was four for seven for 52 yards early in the game but threw a drive-stalling interception to Chase Latham. Latham had two interceptions in the game.
Redmon entered the game, but struggled, finishing 12 of 23 for 105 yards and two interceptions. In all, Belton held Glendale’s passing attack to 157 yards, well below its average of 230 yards per game.
Belton, 8-3, will play host to Fort Osage at 7 p.m. Friday in a Class 5 semifinal. Fort Osage beat Belton 23-14 earlier in the season.
But Rasmussen’s not worried.
“None of the teams left have won a state championship,” Rasmussen said. “Why not us?”
