'10 MI DE/TE William Gholston (Michigan State Verbal)

William Gholston - DE/TE - Detroit Mumford
Gholston first caught my eye at the ThinkDetroit PAL combine and then followed it up with a good showing at Michigan's summer camp. Already a fairly filled out 6'5, 230-lbs, he wasn't as natural a pass catcher as I would like to see from a tight end, but he's been a terror for Mumford at defensive end this year. In case anyone was wondering, he is Vernon Gholston's cousin and he has a chance to be a Big Ten caliber player as well.

William Gholston (6-7, 230), Defensive end (Detroit/Southeastern)
Former OSU linebacker Vernon Gholston may have left for the NFL, but there is another Gholston waiting in the wings. William Gholston, cousin of the New York Jets' No. 6 overall pick in the 2008 draft, will only be a junior next fall but is a similarly freakish athlete.
At 6-foot-7, 230 pounds, he is still a bit awkward in some of his movements and struggles with leverage but showed good get-off, quickness and above average hand usage beating defenders off the edge on the pass-rush. He didn't dominate physically turning the shoulder or attacking half the body but was aggressive and finished well versus older competition. Gholston clearly has the upside to develop into a top 2010 defensive prospect.

ESPN - Midwest Recruiting Blog
Quote:
Some of the top junior and senior football players in the state of Michigan will be in East Lansing Saturday to watch Michigan State take on Notre Dame. Senior tight end Dion Sims (Orchard Lake, Mich./St. Mary's) will be at the game as will junior ESPNU 150 Watch List defensive end William Gholston (Detroit/Southeastern). Both have been offered a scholarship by the Spartans.
The 6-6, 245-pound Gholston is the cousin of former Ohio State and current New York Jets defensive end Vernon Gholston. William is off to a great start this season with 35 tackles and six sacks in three games, all Southeastern victories. His team has yet to give up a point as Southeastern has outscored its opponents 93-0. Gholston says Michigan State, Michigan and Ohio State are the top schools on his list, though he is also looking at Wisconsin, Clemson, Illinois, Cincinnati and a few others.
Gholston would not rule out a commitment to the Spartans this weekend. Provided he does not, he plans to attend the Wisconsin at Michigan game on Sept. 27, the Ohio State at Wisconsin game Oct. 4 and possibly the Penn State at Wisconsin game Oct. 11.

Prior to attending the game, Gholston would not rule out a commitment to the Spartans before returning home. He liked what he saw in East Lansing Saturday and was impressed with the Michigan State defense but wants to continue looking at schools.
He plans to attend the Wisconsin at Michigan game Saturday and will likely attend the Penn State at Wisconsin game on Oct. 11. Ohio State, Illinois and Clemson are other schools on Gholston's list.

Southeastern's Gholston sizing up as a Crable-like talent

Sam Webb: Recruiting
The debate over who should hold the distinction as the No. 1 football player in state of Michigan for the 2010 class is well under way, and there is no shortage of worthy candidates. Inkster quarterback Devin Gardener is receiving strong consideration, and so too is Livonia Stevenson running back Austin White. At this point, though, the youngster with the best case for the title might be Detroit Southeastern linebacker William Gholston.
"William is very gifted," said Scout.com Midwest analyst Allen Trieu. "Physically he has everything you could ask for. You simply don't find kids pushing 6-7 and 250 pounds that can run from sideline to sideline the way he does. He never stops pursuing either. With him playing a linebacker spot for Southeastern, the main thing he will have to do is learn to put his hand down and shed blocks better to develop as a true defensive end, since that is where he will most likely play in college.
On the field, Gholston's movements are amazingly similar to those of former Michigan standout Shawn Crable. Both have uncanny coordination and flexibility for their size, both change direction extraordinarily well, and both possess a burst that allows them to close short distances very quickly. Gholston is probably a step slower than Crable at the same stage of development, but the Southeastern standout is bigger and stronger in the lower body. That's represents huge growth for young man that first caught the attention of scouts two years ago as a 6-6, 215-pounder at the ThinkDetroitPAL camp at Wayne State. There, Gholston held his own against players two years older, but it was obvious that gains in size and aggression were needed to take his game to the next level.

Gholston planning junior day events
from UW site, talks about future plans of visiting junior days at FSU, MSU, UM, And UW.
Talks about his relationship with his recruiting coordinator with coach Alexander from Wisconsin, and says the Badgers are also recruiting his teammate and friend Johnathon Hankins.
Very encouraging article from a Wisconsin standpoint, he describes his relationship with coach Alexander... "You know how you have a big brother? It's kind of like that," also says he had a great time at his visit back at the PSU game, but says he didnt really get to talk to the coaches much and that's something he would really like to do.
