Jeronne played a solid all-around game, finishing with 23 points and pretty much owning the backboards on both ends of the court.

Considered by many to be a "plan B" for the Badgers, I think he could provide some athleticism

You aren't the second best player on powerhouse Madison Memorial, when you are a freshman, unless you've got game. I think many have rationalized Maymon isn't Badger scholarship worthy because: 1. he reportedly has grade problems and possibly wouldn't qualify anyway, and 2. we have a legitimate shot at a few comparable wings in the same class who our staff has shown interest.
Like his coach said, the primary reason he plays like an interior player for Madison Memorial, is because he's their biggest player this year, and was their 2nd biggest last year. Not comparing Maymon to Vince Carter, but he played like an interior player for North Carolina, because that's the role they desired him to play. Maymon certainly has the laterally quickness to guard opposing 3's. Offensively, that same quickness applies to penetrate on defenders if necessary, and he has a decent handle. Plus he started exhibiting an outside shot in AAU ball this summer, translating the great touch he's always possessed, to further away from the basket. He has the perimeter skills required to be successful on the next level. Maymon was an advanced basketball player early because he was skilled and had a good feel for the game, not because he was physically too dominant for the opponent ala Marquis Mason.

Named as one of 5 area players to watch, along with Marquis Mason.
5 Area Players to Watch

Maymon earned 2007 Associated Press and Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association Division 1 All-State honors and was a repeat TCT All-Area and All-Big Eight Conference pick. A powerful inside-outside threat, he led the Spartans to their third straight league title.

Madison Memorial's 40 game conference winning streak was snapped by Beloit Memorial, however Maymon was not playing, and I quote:
Quote:

Eight different players scored and none reached double figures in the Purple Knights victory over Madison Memorial, which played without star junior forward Jeronne Maymon., who sat out the game due to an “academic issue.”
|
Any academic issue cannot be a good one.

the Spartans turned the tables on the Skippers this time around behind a monster performance from Game MVP Jeronne Maymon, the 6-6 junior who finished with 30 points and 16 rebounds to propel his team to a victory in a matchup of teams currently ranked No. 2 among large schools in their respective states.........

Maymon is still hearing from UW and reports no favorites.

MADISON MEMORIAL vs BADGER (03/06/08 at Kohl Center - Madison, Wisconsin)
Box score for D-I quarterfinal against Badger (Lake Geneva)
Maymon was huge with 28 points, 12 rebounds, 4 assists, and 5 steals to go with a tournament record 8 blocks.
Most (I'd say 20) of his points came of offensive rebound putbacks. But it says he only got 6 offensive boards, so it must have been 12 at most. That just shows how dominant he was on the boards. It seemed like he got every rebound and put everything back in. He only took two jump shots the entire game. The first was a sweet fade away from the baseline, but the second was a brick from the free throw line. For me it remains to be seen if his outside game can match his aggressiveness on the inside. He did move very well without the ball and on defense.
His older brother Devonte, a 6'2" senior, also had a great game that included 19 points and a monster dunk.

I love his upside, if only he could qualify. It took Tucker a few years to get his jump shot working, but he showed as long as you can get to the rim you can be successful in the swing. We could use another strong finisher

Maymon is one of the best high school basketball players to hit the Wisconsin hardwood in many years, IMO. I've said it before and I'll say it again, he's underrated as a college prospect too. He's a bit of a tweener at 6'6" and a 3/4, but no more than players like Tucker and Landry. He actually reminds me of a hybrid of those players. He can knife through defenses and has an uncanny knack of avoiding contact in small spaces or sliding off it. Also uncanny is his feel for where the hoop is relatively to his body within 12 feet. Alando had those two very similar traits which allowed him to play bigger than 6'5". He could do a lot with a little space. He's probably not the freakish athlete that Do was, but he's better at getting where he desires off the the bounce and not just the catch. Maymon's shooting is a bit raw, but probably projects better than Tucker's did, and similar to Landry's. Like Landry, Maymon has a pretty fluid stroke. Actually, Maymon's is rather silky as only lefties can do. I'd estimate he hit about 4-5 jumpers in last night's state championship game, more if you count mid range runners. A few he missed rather badly, but his confidence wasn't eroded. His 33 point, 17 rebound defense was rather remarkable considering Tosa East employed a zone primarily to stop Maymon and he received absolutely no help from his teammates. Nobody could hit an outside jump shot to take pressure off him inside. So he had to step outside and make things happen from time to time, which he did with decent success. When he received the ball inside, he was practically automatic. And he had a nose for the ball. The announcer referred to him seemingly having a magnet attached to his body and I thought that was appropriate. In addition to not getting any help from his teammates, he would have performed better if he got an ounce of rest. They played him the full 36 minutes and Maymon gassed out at the end of the ballgame somewhat. One improvement he needs to make on the defense end. He's over-aggressive and that got his team in trouble a few times resulting in uncontested baskets for Tosa East on the break. What he did show was great lateral footwork for an interior player which is a projectability to the wing on the next level. He came up with some monster blocks on defense, but could have accumulated more, if his timing was better. However, as I said, he's one of the best players in Wisconsin in years.
Here's a video of Maymon (#8 on black) from AAU this past summer where he looks leaner, exhibits an excellent handle, and also his silky-smooth touch. Wisconsin High School Basketball - Boys / Youth Basketball - Boys
