6'5 Class of 2011 prospect Sam Thompson from Whitney Young High School in Chicago, IL looked to be the same player we have been used to seeing for the Mac Irvin Fire-16 team. He is super athletic and finishes well in transition, but still needs to refine other aspects of the game. He can occasionally drill the three, but is way too inconsistent. His ball-handling skills are decent, but he does not utilize them as much as we would like to see. However, Thompson keeps making small strides each time we see him, and when you combine that with his big-time athleticism, one can see why the high majors are all over him. More on that a bit later.
The University of Wisconsin is making the recruitment of Sam Thompson a high priority and we would not be surprised to see an offer coming soon.

I've seen Sam play many times while watching Whitney Young for Chris Colvin. He is an absolutely crazy athlete..very, very long. Very good defender due to his size, length and quickness. Offensively, he is very unpolished. Right now, his game mostly consists of alley-oops and using his size and athleticism to over-whelm defenders. If he works on his ball-handling and develops a jump shot outside of 10 feet, he would be darn near impossible to stop offensively, but until he does, he is somewhat one-dimensional.

Ive never seen him play however that is exactly what ive heard from others that have seen him. A good way to describe him is the All-Potential team.
PS. Cy when was the last time you saw him play? Also can someone explain to me why that ive heard that he will not be in Illinois class?

Exactly what the scouts think. I guess he didn't/doesn't? play that much for his AAU team because he is still so raw. Sick athlete, can anyone dig up some measurables?
FWIW, Oregon State lean. His teammate at Whitney Young, 2010 G Ahmad Starks, is already committed to the Beavers.

"(The University of Minnesota) didn't really compare," UW Kicker Taylor Mehlhaff said. "I loved the atmosphere here. It was pretty easy to cross (Minnesota) off the list. I wanted to play at the highest level possible but I also wanted to have that college atmosphere."

He is supposed to be an Oregon State lean, but every time I've talked to Sam, he's said that he isn't even looking at his recruitment right now, and is leaving it up to his coaches. He now plays a lot for the Mac Irvin Fire 16-U, and is their best player along with Dre Henley.
Last time I saw him play was the state championship game that Whitney Young won against Jereme Richmond's Waukegan team in March.
Yes, his game is predicated on potential, but I've heard that he's been just plain dominant at times this summer on the AAU circuit.

Also, he can't have us on his list if we didn't offer.

I think it only works on FF, why I don't know. He has Texas and Arizona on his list, as well as UConn, and none of them have offered, and he said these are the only schools he is considering.

Gotcha. Thanks for the update. Crazy that he is cutting his list to schools that haven't offered. I wonder if he is anticipating offers from these schools or if these are just his "dream offers".
