Official UW Season Thread ('08-09')
Bern did this with Football and since im sick to my stomach about Football right now, I thought id get the basketball discussion going.
what do you see the rotation being?
PG.Trevon Hughes-33-35 minutes
SG.Jason Bohannon-28-32 minutes
SF.Joe Krabenholf-30-33 minutes
PF.Marcus Landry-30-35 minutes
C.Nankinvil-30-34 minutes
6.Tim Jarzmus-15-20 minutes (backing up both Bohannon and Krabby)
7.Leur-15-20 minutes (backing up Nankivil and Marcus Landry)
8.Jordan Taylor getting an occasional minutes behind Hughes and maybe Bohannon
9.Robert Hughes-maybe limited playing time if someone gets into foul trouble
10.Berggen-Ditto as hughes
11.Ryan Evans-little impact this year pretty much a garbage time player
12.Gavinski/Markolf/Gullickson-ditto as evans

Im watching NOTGR right now and Gavinski does not look like a basketball player if you take away his height.

CBS top ranked point/Combo guards.... Player Rankings: Wings - NCAA Division I Mens Basketball - CBSSports.com
its a joke to me that pop is below players like
Iman Shumpert #35 (good prospect but really? didnt know he was Jrue Holliday)
Kailan Lucas #18 (Lol)
Manny Harris #28 (LMAO)
Dominic James #34 ( I guess all Pop has to do is throw up bricks all game long)
Ronald Steele #36 (how long has it been since he's actually played?)
Stephen Curry #1 I know everybody is on his jock but he is as one dimensional as they get even though we've all witnessed that one dimension first hand.

The only one of those players I wouldn't take over Trevon is Iman Shumpert....maybe DJ or Steele.
Dominic James exhibited a low basketball IQ the last couple of seasons and his shooting has been awful, but he stops penetration a little better than Pop and his freakish quickness allows him to wreak havoc in the lane more often. If pressed I'd probably give a slight edge to James in spite of his liabilities.
Steele was better the first couple seasons than Hughes has been. If he's the gimpy Steele, then sure, but you've got to figure he's somewhere between that guy and the one earlier in his career, which is comparable to Hughes.
Stephen Curry almost single-handedly beat every opponent in the tourney, including us.
Lucas is a very good defender, has blazing quickness, and is a good finisher around the goal. Plus, you have to expect substantial improvement since he was only a freshman last season.
Manny Harris might end up being the best player in the Big Ten conference. Good on ball defender, quick first step laterally and going forward, sparked Michigan w/ his reading of the passing lanes. Offensively, he could always get where he wanted to because of his change of direction ability, he just was a little turnover prone because ball-handling skills needed honing a little. If he does that and adds range to his jumper he'll be downright scary. Tremendously competitive guy.....reminds me of Dwyane Wade a little. I'd draft the guy in the lottery in '09 or '10.

I was at the Red-White scrimmiage last night and boy, Keaton Nanikivil, really, really impressed me. He looked great running with the red squad and being powerful inside. After tonight, I would have to say he is the favorite to start at Center. Also, for the red squad our Freshman PG, Jordan Taylor looked fantastic, he only turned the ball over twice in 29 minutes of play, looked comftorable in the offense, made his free throws and even made some nice moves to get 10 points, and dishing four assists.

I was also at the game last night and thought Jordan Taylor was great, he even made Trevon look bad a couple of times on both ends of the court. Jason Bohannon also has made a ton of progress taking people off the dribble and setting up his teamates for some easy buckets. and would every one just lay off Gavinski already dude rejected Leuer at least 2 times and knocked down a couple of jumpers as well He has Dave Mader written all over him and who wouldn't want that over him. JK.... The other frosh that looked the part was Rob Wilson. needs to work a little harder to get around screens but should be a great defender down the road

I don't want him off the team I just want to free another Scholarship for Mr. Davis, BTW from what I hear Ryan Evans apparently was super, super raw. Now I was a person who at first was not happy about that offer, then I cooled on it but if Ryan isn't up to snuff in two years then I dont know, it still pisses me off that we took away a scholarship on a major project. When we are absolutly loaded instate Jamil Wilson, Flavien Davis(who I think is a perfect wing for the swing) and Kyle Kelm who is another goof fit at forward. About JP I heard Leur was just as soft as he ever was, good for him though I hope he dominates I just dont see it.

What I saw of Ryan Evans is he just needs time. he did not do anything good or bad. Physically he has all the tools. He's well put together, moves really well without the ball he just looked lost out there. Reminded me of the first couple of games that Jarmuscz played last year were he was afraid of doing anything other than passing the ball. Ill take 5 years of this guy over 2-3 of a guy who may not buy into the system and disrupts what Bo has built. Sure would be nice to get past the sweetsixteen though....

Thanks for the reports, fellas.
A lot of promising developments came from the Red/White scrimmage it seems.
We already knew who Hughes, Landry, Bohannon, and Krabbenhoft were for the most part; so it wasn't particularly important that they perform well. Although, it's good to see Krabbe is sticking his jumper finally between the scrimmage and being the 3-point champion at Night of the Grateful Red. Could give us a few points more per game directly and indirectly open up driving and passing lanes without his defender sagging.
But the potential emergences of Nankivil and Taylor are very exciting.
The most important question we needed answered was who is going to step up as the starting center. We potentially saw whom when Nankivil led the team in scoring. I'm not surprised at all that Nankivil showed that level of potency, just surprised it's coming this soon off last year when, in limited minutes, he looked lost. Always thought he projected to center because he plays bigger than his height, as evidenced by being a big time shot blocker in his school. Long wingspan and good timing. Really finished strong offensively and could step out and hit jumpers. And obviously can space eat on the boards with his wide body.
We needed one of the freshmen to step up and be a legit part of the rotation. Thought it would be Taylor because of his physical and mental maturity. Glad he's confirming my suspicion there. True point guard who can stop penetration and get a little on the other end.
I really like our 8-man rotation of: Hughes, Bohannon, Krabbe, Landry, Nankivil, Leuer, Taylor, and Jarmusz. No way both Berggren and Markolf can redshirt. One will be needed to guard bigger centers like Mullens in the Big Ten. Health will be especially paramount because our rotation is thin, though. Jarmusz is really the only one we can afford an injury to for an extended period. Bobby Wilson and he are pretty interchangeable. Pretty good defenders whose effective offensive game primarily consists of a spot up jumper now. Wilson has a lot more potential to expand though. Like the assertiveness offensively at least right now.
Check it, all people are saying about Gavinski is if after 4 years he's not a contributor, he shouldn't be asked back for a fifth. It doesn't seem fair that a player who contributes usually only gets 4 years of free schooling, but he gets five.
