In what would have been thought of as a surprise a couple months ago, Marcus Landry and Wesley Matthews are highly probable to make NBA rosters. Hey, if Marcus Landry's NBA prospects were deceptive because of being in the UW system, the league should give Greg Stiemsma a proper look. I cannot recall a player more misused by a sport's team than Stiemer. That's the positive news for in-state players. The negative is both guards Mike Taylor and Mike Wilks have been released, and veteran center Chris Mihm is still waiting at home for a call.

The total NBA players from the state of Wisconsin currently sits at 9, a list which includes: Devin Harris, Caron Butler, Carl Landry, Anthony Carter, Travis Diener, Kyle "Dream" Weaver, Steve Novak, Marcus Landry, and Wesley Matthews. But once injuries mount and Mihm's demands decrease, it should reach double digits. That would be the first time it's occurred since '04-05, subsequent to which both Spree and Nick the Quick, retired.

On a semi related note to this thread topic, it's a big week for Wisconsinite MMA fighters, if anybody's interested in that sport also. Both Ben Rothwell and Eric Schafer will be competing in the televised portion of UFC 104. Anthony Pettus from Milwaukee was supposed to take on former champion Rob McCullough in their next event, but was forced to withdraw due to injury.

Milwaukee, but he moved to Texas just before high school. Unfortunately, otherwise maybe Bucky could have taken advantage of his presence in state. I don't think anyone could legitimately question if he would have developed worse and not been an NBA player had he stayed here throughout high school. I mean he's achieved about as little as one could reasonably expect, considering his size and athleticism.

Early season/career performances of note in college bball from Wisconsinites:

- Jeronne Maymon (MU) had 9 points and 5 rebounds in his career debut.

- His teammate Dwight Buycks did a little bit of everything, tallying 7 points (2-7), 5 rebs, 4 asts, and 2 stls; in his D1 debut.

- MSU PG Korie Lucious scored 11 points (4-10 shooting) and accumulated 8 dimes in his first game.

- Jamil Wilson of Oregon is averaging about 7 points and 6 rebounds through 3 games.

- Scott Christopherson has been in double figures in each of his first two games for ISU and is receiving praise from some ISU fans.

- Fellow Cyclone Diante Garrett has been the consummate true point only taking 5 shots through two games and averaging 5 assists.

- NIU Panther Adam Koch was perfect from the field and line (2-2, 9-9), scoring 13 points in their debut.

- UWM's Ricky Franklin had 21 pts (9-17), 6 rebs, 4 asts, 2 stls in their opener. BTW, former Madison Memorial guard Jerard Ajami, who walked on with the Panthers, started in their victory.

- Andy Polka of Loyola (Chi) had 12 rebounds and 5 points against Kansas State. True freshman Ben Averkamp started alongside him accumulating 6 points, 6 rebounds, 2 blocks, and 2 steals.

- Sophomore pg Kwamain Mitchell had 13 (6-15, chucking), 2 asts, 2 stls in his season debut.

- Riley Grafft had 14 points and 6 rebounds in his season debut for American (barely recorded statistics last season)

- Troy Cotton of UWGB was blanked in the opener but bounced back with point totals of 25 and 16, subsequently.

- South Dakota's Jake Thomas scored 20 points on 6-8 3-pt shooting against TAMU-CC

- James Haarsma had 11 points and 5 rebounds for Evansville in their opener.

On the recruiting trail:

Maple Northwestern guard Steve Tecker chose South Dakota over St. Louis, Drake, Bucknell, and ND St.

According to Mark Miller of wissports.net he joins 13 other members of the '10 in-state class in committing to a D1 school which include:

Vander Blue of Madison Memorial (Marquette)
Evan Anderson of Eau Claire North (Wisconsin)
Josh Gasser of Port Washington (Wisconsin)
Kameron Cerroni of Sussex Hamilton (Green Bay)
Chip Rank of Cedarburg (Northern Iowa)
Flavien Davis of Wisconsin Lutheran (Loyola of Chicago)
Kyle Kelm of Randolph (Milwaukee)
Ben Mills of Arrowhead (Boise State)
Steve McWhorter of Racine St. Catherine’s (Indiana State)
T.J. Bray of Catholic Memorial (Princeton)
Troy Huff of Brookfield Academy (North Dakota)
Evan Richard of Cuba City (Milwaukee)
Reid Koenen of The Prairie School (Texas State)

Cool, but suprised with Avercamp and Christopherson. Played against a lot of these guys on Bern's list. Wisconsin is becoming a pretty legit basketball state.

Indeed, he attended West Allis Hale. Good looking out reporting his performance because I didn't realize he was still playing college basketball. My impression was he had graduated a couple years ago. I had no idea he was a major contributor for a D1 team last year. Earlier in his career he was an afterthought.

Anyways, in his most recent game he posted another solid stat line, scoring 9 and pulling down 9 boards, in just 14 minutes. Not sure why he didn't play more.

More notable performances from the last couple of days:

The Good:

Kwamain Mitchell scored 20 against Nebraska to lead the Billikens to a double digit win.

James Haarsma had a monster line of 22 and 12 for the Aces against SIU-Edwardsville.

Jerry Smith scored 14 and dropped 5 dimes in his season debut against Arkansas.

Scott Christopherson scored 15 and added 5 assists against Drake, another performance which received praise from Cyclone fans. Vincent's Diante Garrett contributed 11 setups in the same game.

Dwight Buycks posted a line of 12/3/3 for Marquette, while teammate Jeronne Maymon was very passive again only taking 4 shots and scoring 4 points. His rebounding per minute rate has been pretty good however.

Andy Polka filled out the box for Loyola with 11 pts/12 rebs/4 asts/3 stls, while true frosh Ben Averkamp also helped the Ramblers by contributing 12 pts/5 rebs/2 blks.

Riley Grafft continued his turnaround for American, scoring 17 points and adding 5 rebounds.

Troy Cotton had 19 points and 5 rebounds for the Phoenix on Wednesday, while Randy Berry added 12 points and 7 boards.

Manitowoc's Nathan Zastrow, a true frosh point guard for North Dakota St., got off the schnide, scoring 9 points and adding 6 assists against some school I've never heard of.

The bad:

After being a significant contributor last season, Jacolby Hardiman was kicked off the Central Michigan team for a felony he committed at a Sports Bar in the area (presumably an assault). He ended up taking a plea and receiving two days in jail for the incident. Subsequently he transferred to Robert Morris University.

No Wisconsinites on UW-Milwaukee are doing anything now that Tone Boyle is sidelined.

Korie Lucious was blanked for MSU and only tallied 2 assists against Gonzaga.
