Ryan Groy of Middleton has verbally committed to the University of Wisconsin football program for the Class of 2009, the third highly regarded lineman to do so following Saturday's "Junior Day" events on campus.
Groy, who had drawn interest from many programs nationally and especially Michigan and Iowa in the Big Ten, is projected as an offensive lineman in college.
Shelby Harris of Mequon Homestead and Jordan Kohout of Waupun are expected to remain on the defensive line. They are both classified as Dream Team All-Americans by PrepStar, the recruiting Web site, and Kohout is listed as the No. 1 prospect nationally.
All three will be eligible to sign letters of intent in February 2009. UW coaches are prohibited from commenting on recruits until they sign.
Groy, who stands 6-foot-5, 285 pounds, reportedly has been timed at 5.2 seconds in the 40-yard dash, bench-presses 350 pounds and has squatted over 500 pounds.
"Ryan has exceptional agility and foot speed," said longtime Middleton coach Tim Simon, who referenced Groy as a solid student.

Also, there isn't a Groy thread in the 2009 forum.

Groy was added to the 09 news thread.

"I didn't think it was a big deal, the de-commitment," former Gopher verbal David Gilreath said. "I think this was the best decision of my life."
"(The University of Minnesota) didn't really compare," UW Kicker Taylor Mehlhaff said. "I loved the atmosphere here. It was pretty easy to cross (Minnesota) off the list. I wanted to play at the highest level possible but I also wanted to have that college atmosphere."

Sports: Prep football: Birth of a football rivalry
Quote:
Middleton senior offensive tackle Ryan Groy, who also took some snaps on defense and is the Cardinals' long snapper, said it was too bad that the seniors on both teams would only get to meet once on the football field.
But the University of Wisconsin recruit, who helped anchor an offensive line -- including tight ends Erich Lengfeld and Sean Bayer, center Shayne Steward, guards Kevin Drunasky and Stephen Vassalotti and tackle Ty Hartjes -- that paved the way for a 330-yard rushing effort by the Cardinals, was pleased to get a crack at the Wildcats.
"We've had a rivalry with these guys since elementary and middle school. It's great to get to play them here," Groy said. "We knew our time was coming. It was fun to play Verona but beating them was even better."
