Weis finally gave Budmayr an offer, talks about how he is the only quarterback that Notre Dame is looking at for 2009.

And the competition heats up...

From the ND site...talks about receiving the ND offer...says ND is even with the other schools that have offered and he is still planning on committing before his senior season.

I was just going to post it. Nice scoop Marley.
Huge commitment for Wisconsin! We schooled Fat Charlie and the Zooker for a big time in state recruit.
As I've said before, I'm a huge Budmayr fan. He was one of the top 5 prospects in the 2009 class for Wisconsin, IMO. His release is very quick and effortless, he can make all the throws, he has good pocket presence/mobility, and he's not just potential being very productive in the state of Illinois.
I wonder if Fat Charlie is going to harrass Budmayr via text like Oglesby, for daring to pick tUW over the Domers.
Also, could this event trigger a domino effect? Appleton and Hawthorne have to be familiar with a talent like Budmayr, seeing as though they're from the state of Illinois.

Chicago Sun-Times

Marian Central junior quarterback Jon Budmayr gave an oral commitment to Wisconsin on Tuesday.
Budmayr (6-1, 200 pounds) chose the Badgers over Notre Dame, which recently offered him a scholarship. Illinois, Nebraska, Northwestern, Arizona, Iowa, Stanford and Boston College were also interested in Budmayr.
"He is a huge catch for Wisconsin," recruiting analyst Tom Lemming said. "He is the best pickup for Wisconsin out of Chicago in 10 years. He's got great skills and he's their type of player.
"It's a big statement that Wisconsin has made in Chicago. They possibly landed a four-year starter."
Budmayr is considered one of the best quarterbacks in Illinois' class of 2009. He is often compared to Glenbard North's Evan Watkins, who committed to Northwestern, and Maine South's Charlie Goro, who has a scholarship offer from Eastern Illinois.
"It's a very good year for QBs in Chicago," Lemming said, "and, [Budmayr] may turn out to be the best of them all."
Lemming described Budmayr as the type of the player who can change the outcome of a game.
With Budmayr sidelined with a hamstring injury, Marian Central was knocked off by Montini 33-0 in a regular-season matchup in October.
Four weeks later and with Budmayr under center, Marian defeated Montini 29-15 in the Class 5A state playoffs. Budmayr completed 20 of 27 passes for 235 yards and two touchdowns in the win.
"The difference was one player," Lemming said. "He seems to just have it. He's not the biggest quarterback, but he's got good feet and he always finds the passing seams."
Budmayr passed for nearly 2,000 yards and 15 touchdowns his junior year despite missing five games with a hamstring injury. He also led Marian to the Class 5A state championship game in 2006 (a 35-14 loss to Springfield Sacred Heart) and to the semifinals in 2007 (a 10-9 loss to Morris).

ESPN Blurb about the commitment

Badgers get their signal-caller in Jon Budmayr
Jon Budmayr, an ESPN 150 Watch List prospect, has committed to Wisconsin over scholarship offers from programs such as Notre Dame and Nebraska, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports.
ESPN's Tom Luginbill spoke about the news, "Budmayr is a very Chase Daniel-like player in terms of stature, arm strength and athleticism. He lacks ideal height, but he is ultra-competitive and possesses great intangibles. He is a much bigger dual-threat than many give him credit for and he also throws extremely well on the run."
"This is one of the more intriguing pick-ups by any school so far because Budmayr is a real deviation from what Wisconsin fans have become accustomed to at quarterback --in other words, he's more than just a pocket care-taker that is expected not to make mistakes."
"He is more of an athletic gunslinger which leads us to believe that we could see Wisconsin getting a little more creative and wide-open than they have been in the past because Budmayr needs to be in the shotgun some to mask his height deficiencies and is also at his best when he can move around and make plays. This is an exciting addition for the Badgers."

The more I think about it, the more he reminds me of former Heisman Trophy Winner Danny Wuerfell of the Florida Gators. He was one of my personal top 5 prospects for the Badgers back in February, so I'm not faking the funk with my excitement.
Top 5
4. QB Jon Budmayr, Illinois Budmayr should be favored over Watkins because he's the more polished prospect right now. I might favor Watkins if we didn't take a QB who has had more success than running it in 2008 (Phillips). Watkins similarly has potential with his arm but might be more of a threat running the football right now. Budmayr put up amazing numbers through the air last season and compliments to the Badgers for having the foresight to offer him early. On film he makes passing the football look effortless. Can sling it a distance from nearly any position. Has excellent mobility in the pocket. I don't think he'll be a particularly big running threat on the next level, but maybe that's a positive. When he scrambles out of the pocket the intent usually will be to pass. You can carve out more yardage through the air than on the ground. I was one of the bigger Donovan supporters, but his instincts were to run the football outside of the pocket just because he had that ability. Budmayr isn't quite as adept so his instinct will be to throw.

Recently, the University of Wisconsin football program received a verbal commitment from quarterback Jon Budmayr, who picked the Badgers over Notre Dame, among other suitors. Budmayr will be a senior at Marian Central Catholic in Woodstock, Ill. By all accounts, Budmayr is no Matt Barkley, a USC commit and the consensus No. 1 quarterback in the 2009 recruiting class. Scout.com has Barkley in the top slot and Budmayr at No. 55 on its QB board. Nobody is disputing Barkley's credentials or upside. He's a 6-foot-3, 227-pound prototype from Santa Ana, Calif.
But when Lemming — who has almost completed his evaluations of this quarterback class — was asked specifically about Budmayr, he pointed out, "I've seen all the California kids, and I think Budmayr is one of the best in the country. He could play in any offense. Many of the California quarterbacks seem like they're in the cookie-cutter mold. Budmayr is a little bit different, but in a good way. He's got good feet and a quick release."
What kept Budmayr from getting more national recruiting traffic was his height, according to Lemming. He's a 6-footer, maybe 6-1. "But he plays much taller," Lemming contended. "His release points are good, and he has a great knowledge of the game. When you watch him on tape, you don't see his passes getting batted down. If he was three inches taller, he would be a five-star player. Right now, he's a four-star who will probably become a five-star in college. He has that extra something that you can't describe when it comes to quarterbacks."
At this stage in his development, Lemming feels that Budmayr has many of the same instincts of a Drew Brees, who also had to overcome the perception that he was too short when he came out of high school. Brees, a 6-footer, went on to become the Big Ten's all-time leading passer during his Purdue career (1997-2000). "The Badgers have had some bad luck with Chicago area quarterbacks," conceded Lemming, who's based out of Chicago. "But he (Budmayr) is a little bit different guy than what they've had in the past. They've got a real gem."

Budmayr was one of 472 nominees for the U.S. Army All American Bowl.
Spurning Notre Dame didn't help his chances with Tom Lemming on the selection committee and the game airing on the Notre Dame flagship network. Might as well call it the Notre Dame Recruit Invitational.
The ESPN Under Armour All American game is going to own the U.S. Army game in a couple of years. It will mean so much more for players to get invited when the selectors don't have so much of an agenda.
