BN$--Hageman Back From First Official Visit

Shede says he definitely noticed how much Wisconsin used the TE and how tOSU did not utilize the position at all. Minnesota still has the lead but Wisconsin was impressive.

GopherHole.com - GopherHole Quick Chat: Eric Hageman, on Ra'Shede's Wisconsin visit

10/5

Via his father: Hageman was impressed with the atmosphere at Wisconsin. Overall, he enjoyed the trip in spite of the Badgers losing. His parents didn't accompany him nor will they on any of his visits. Even though his father is a Minnesota alum he's not pressuring him to be a legacy.

Ra'shede basically reiterates that he loves how Wisconsin uses their TE's and he doesn't like that OSU rarely utilizes their TE's.

Ra'Shede Hageman will take a flight Saturday morning to Columbus for his official visit to Ohio State University. Last weekend, he made a similar trip to Madison to check out the University of Wisconsin.

Sometime in the next two or three weeks, the Minneapolis Washburn tight end will fly to Gainesville to visit the University of Florida.

As one of the nation's top 10 tight end prospects in the class of 2009, the 6-foot-6, 250-pound Hageman is getting an inside peek at prominent NCAA Division I football programs. A few years ago, there were days when Hageman thought he never would see the kind of opportunities that await him.

"It's never been about what Ra'Shede can do for our team," Washburn coach Peter Haugen said. "We're excited about how he has improved so much as a person. He's had some challenges."

Maturity has become as vital to Hageman as his speed, strength and pass-catching ability. Before he turned 7, Ra'Shede and his younger brother, Xavier, had lived in 12 foster homes in the Minneapolis-St. Paul area when a compassionate married couple, Eric Hageman and Jill Coyle, saw them on a video provided by Hennepin County adoption services.

Eric and Jill finalized the adoption process in 1997, then welcomed Ra'Shede and Xavier into their south Minneapolis home.

Ra'Shede and Xavier never knew their father, who diedwhen they were toddlers. Their mother struggled with drug abuse when both were born and eventually landed in prison. Their mother served her time and moved back to Minnesota two years ago but has a limited relationship with her sons.

Eric and Jill are white. As an African-American child, it took Ra'Shede several years to understand why he has white parents.

Ra'Shede often rebelled against Eric and Jill and had behavior problems in school. He even considered running away when he was in eighth grade. Ra'Shede, now 18, is eternally grateful he stayed home.

"I don't know where I would be or what my life would be like if they hadn't adopted me," he said. "They fed me and put me in good schools. I don't look at them as white anymore. They saved me."

Hageman has a chance to help Washburn complete an undefeated season in the Minneapolis City Conference. A win tonight over Minneapolis North (3-3, 3-2 MCC) would give the Millers (5-1, 5-0) the conference title. For Hageman, the title would represent another significant achievement in a life that started with setbacks.

Xavier, 16, is a junior enrolled at the St. Paul Conservatory for Performing Arts and has visions of becoming a choreographer.

No matter how far Washburn goes in the postseason, Hageman has established himself as the most coveted football recruit in Minnesota. He's ranked 10th among the nation's top tight ends by Rivals.com, a leading national scouting service for high school football. He has 10 touchdown receptions and averages 24.6 yards per catch.

If Haugen didn't need Hageman on defense, he probably would have more than 16 catches for 393 yards.

"When he plays on one side of the ball, he'll be a force at the next level," Edina coach Kim Nelson said. "I haven't seen a kid with that combination of size and speed. He's scary."

Hageman has narrowed his college choices to Ohio State, Wisconsin, Florida or Minnesota. Florida has offered only 14 scholarships for the class of 2009, and one is being saved for Hageman. To reach his final four, Hageman turned down scholarship offers from Oklahoma, Nebraska, Iowa, Iowa State, Illinois, Michigan State, North Carolina and Connecticut.

Gophers coach Tim Brewster and several of his assistants have met with Hageman at Washburn and are planning for his official visit on Nov. 8, the day the Gophers play host to Michigan.

Hageman is happy the recruiting process comes around only once.

"A referee in one of our games this season told me I should go to Minnesota," he said. "The pressure is out there. It'll be a tough decision about the U because it's home. I have to think about playing for a program that's trying to build compared to one that's already on top. The academics are important, too."

Hageman, who said he wants to major in law enforcement or criminal justice, already has qualified academically to attend a Division I school — another key achievement for the Washburn star, who also starts at center for the Millers' basketball team.

Two special moments are approaching for the Hageman family — the day Ra'Shede announces his college choice and the day he graduates from Washburn.

"If you asked us a few years ago if Ra'Shede would be in this position, it's unlikely," Eric said. "We're so proud of him and what he's accomplished. He's recognized the opportunities in front of him, and he didn't want to squander it."

Says he had a great visit to OSU and thinks he could see the field as a freshman. Uses the analogy of he and Pryor as similar to an early Shaq and Kobe.

Two key Ohio State recruiting targets were making their official visit to Ohio State over the weekend. Tight end Ra'Shede Hageman (Minneapolis/Washburn) and wide receiver Marlon Brown (Memphis, Tenn./Harding) are two outstanding talents who could be great targets for freshman quarterback Terrelle Pryor the next few seasons.

It was no coincidence that Pryor played player/host to the two.

"He was being real with me," Hageman said of Pryor. "He said if I played for Ohio State he would definitely throw me the ball. I look at it like it would be like Shaq and Kobe in the early days."

Hageman has made official visits to Ohio State and Wisconsin. He has a visit scheduled to Minnesota the weekend of Nov. 8 when the Gophers host Michigan and plans to schedule a trip to Florida.

Hageman was very impressed with his Ohio State visit, though he is not ready to declare the Buckeyes his leader.

"I have to look at where everyone stands," he said. "It's hard to say who leads. I have to finish my visits."

wow, really?

shaq and kobe?

I wonder if Hageman realizes that OSU doesn't use their TE's except for to block for Pryor when he runs.

Kobe didn't pass the ball either so I think it's an appropriate analogy.

He better not to go OSU, I'd feel sorry for him..

I love how Tressel uses Pryor to get recruits excited because he's trying to hide the fact that they're not going to get the ball
