He is a solid tight end and if he played there in college he would be best utilized as a blocker. He has solid hands, but does not come across as a natural receiver. He has solid size, but lacks ideal height. He does carry good bulk and we feel he will better use his skills as a defensive end. He is a physical kid and displays good strength. Displays the ability to fire off the ball low and take on a blocker and hold his ground. He can be good at using his hands to maintain some separation, but needs to be more consistent with this especially when engaging a blocker coming right out of his stance. He is a solid tackler and displays good straight-line speed. As a pass rusher he can create some push, but needs to keep developing his pass rush arsenal and using his weapons. Herring is a solid prospect who offers some versatility though we think he projects best to defense. (Rating: 75)
Offers: UW, Kansas, Kansas St., Stanford

Notes:
- Also plays basketball and is a shot putter
- Honorable Mention all St. Louis Metro Area
- School has produced multiple D1 prospects recently

Switched his commitment to Wisconsin!

I dont follow recruiting super closely but that kind of seemed out of the blue.
Scout has him listed as a TE and Rivals as a DE. Anyone have any idea where UW wants him to play?

Most likely at DE. He lacks the speed to be a pass catching TE. Perhaps a big blocking TE.

He lacks the speed/quickness to beat OT's off the edge, and agility to adjust laterally to their first move. Herring is probably another biggish DE (for a high schooler) they'll try and pack weight on and convert into a DT. They prefer their DT's to be around 280 or so, therefore he's not that far away. At 250 right now, so around 30 more, 10 per year until he's 20.

This commitment really came out of nowhere and I'm not sure how I feel about it after viewing his reel.

BTW, I'd strongly recommend watching his ESPN videos, even if you have a Rivals' account.

I see him staying at SDE and playing the Monty role, which is to stand up the line and open it up for the OLBs to get to the ball. That position has been sorely missed since Monty has been gone.
