I actually think there's a better chance he winds up at free safety, after initial trials as a linebacker. Receiver or tight end also.
He plays too high to be a linebacker. He's often off balance and getting leveraged backward by singular ballcarriers, and the pile, persistently taking inconvenient routes to the football up the middle. Playing too high is also warning sign that quicker players will be able to cut off his backside. Although that didn't occur in the video because he was cautious not to over-pursue. When he drove offensive players backwards it's because he lunged at their legs like a little guy....but you can't always get away with committing that earlier with quicker, more advanced players at the next level.
The tendency to play too high was the reason that Beckum had to be switched to offense, and I think the same will occur with Byers also. But like Beckum, Byers is also an outstanding athlete (well, not quite as good as Travis), so that makes him versatile. His ball skills are outstanding. He makes some very quick breaks on the ball, agile diving breakups, and nonchalant interceptions on contested balls. Also has doubled at Alter as a quarterback, so he knows what a signal caller wants him to do on the field and where to be. I think he should play to those strengths and be a Drew Bennett type possession receiver. UW does not have any outside Duckworth, among their younger receivers, and he of course reportedly has injury and admittance questions. We need receivers regardless, and recruits may be reticent to commit here this cycle with 5 players of the position that have junior classifications. Bucky may need to get creative as a result. I feel very confident in the OLB core already with Taylor, Hill, O'Neill, Zagzebski, and Rouse already in the fold. That's a strong crew.
