RB ANDRE DAWSON (6-1/210), Cedar Rapids (Iowa) Washington
CLASS OF 2010
OFFERS: Illinois, Iowa, Wisconsin
PERFORMANCE: Ran for 74 yards and two touchdowns in 27-23 loss to Iowa City (Iowa) High.
STRENGTHS: Has tremendous size for a tailback, and when he lowers his shoulder pads, he will knock the defender backward. Also has an above-average change of direction.
WEAKNESSES: He should hit the hole a little harder and use his size and strength more often rather than trying to run laterally. – BARRY EVERY

Running back Andre' Dawson (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Washington) is the early choice as the No. 1 class of 2010 prospect in Iowa.
The 6-foot-1 and 210-pound Dawson, who runs the 40-yard dash in 4.5 seconds, combines good size, power, speed and the ability to make would-be tacklers miss like few high school prospects can.

Dawson rushed for 1,483 yards and averaged six yards per carry during his junior season. He scored 27 times on the ground and once on a pass reception. Dawson had similar numbers his sophomore year when he gained 1,387 yards, averaged 7.5 yards per carry and scored 13 times.

Not surprisingly, recruiters are already making their pitch for Dawson. He has scholarship offers from Iowa, Wisconsin and Illinois.

"I've taken unofficial visits to all three," Dawson said. "And a lot of other schools are sending mail."

Oregon, Alabama, Oklahoma, North Carolina, Nebraska and Kansas are some of the schools sending mail to Dawson on a consistent basis. At this point he plans to research all of them and just about any other school that shows an interest.

"I don't have any favorite schools at all," Dawson said.

From the Oregon site. Though Oregon hasn't offered, Dawson says he is high on the Ducks and would like to visit. Kansas, Iowa and Illinois have sent official offers, while Wisconsin's offer is still a verbal one at this point. He is looking for a school that has a solid O-Line and team mindset.

Dawson picked up offers from Kansas and Cincy.

Quote:
"I was at a Kansas junior day over the weekend," Dawson said. "That went really well. I also went to an Iowa junior day. Florida State, Alabama and Michigan want me to come to junior days. I'm scheduled to go to Nebraska's spring game."

"(The University of Minnesota) didn't really compare," UW Kicker Taylor Mehlhaff said. "I loved the atmosphere here. It was pretty easy to cross (Minnesota) off the list. I wanted to play at the highest level possible but I also wanted to have that college atmosphere."

Lueders narrows his list to five - ESPN

Quote:
Running back Andre Dawson (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Washington) is coming off a junior season in which he led his team to an 11-2 record. He rushed for 1,483 yards, averaged six yards per carry and scored 28 times. The 6-foot-1 and 210-pound Dawson rushed for 1,387 yards and scored 13 times during his sophomore season.

By the end of January Dawson had scholarship offers from Iowa, Wisconsin and Illinois. He has since doubled his offer total, adding Purdue, Kansas and Cincinnati to his list.

"I'm looking at all six schools," Dawson said. "And I recently took a trip to Nebraksa. I went to their spring game and I went to a spring practice at Iowa. I'm going to visit Iowa State pretty soon and I want to get to Purdue and Cincinnati. I'm going to try to get out UCLA and Tennessee too."

Dawson said he does not have a favorite and probably won't select a college until after his senior football season.

"I want to give all the schools a shot," he said.

By the end of April, running back Andre Dawson (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Washington) had six scholarship offers, Iowa, Illinois, Wisconsin, Purdue, Cincinnati and Kansas. He has added an offer from Minnesota to his list.

"Right now I'm looking at all seven," Dawson said. "I'm also looking at UCLA, Tennessee and Auburn. And I'll be visiting Iowa State pretty soon. I'm going to go to Minnesota and Purdue too. I'm not sure when yet."

The 6-foot-1, 210-pounder is one of the top running back prospects in the Midwest. After rushing for 1,387 yards and 13 touchdowns his sophomore year, Dawson gained 1,483 yards and scored 28 times during his junior season.

Dawson visited Iowa during the middle of June.

"I went to the campus and talked to the coaches and my former teammate (Iowa freshman wide receiver) Keenan Davis," Dawson said. "I talked to some players on a panel too. It went well."

Dawson has a pretty good idea of what the rest of the recruiting process will look like.

"I'm thinking I'll take official visits during the season," he said. "That way I can commit after the playoffs."

What season is it? Football season! | GazetteOnline.com

8/25

Quote:
The start of high school football season sneaks up on most of us in broad summer daylight.

School just got started. Labor Day still is 12 days away. But come Friday night (Thursday for Cedar Rapids schools Jefferson and Xavier), it’s on.
The season, however, hasn’t crept up on the players.

“Pretty much, football has been my life this summer,” said Cedar Rapids Washington running back Andre Dawson, who carries the ball and the distinction of being the top college football recruit in his city.

“Coming in at 6 o’clock every morning, working out for a good four or five hours every day,” Dawson said. “When you’re doing that you tend to get a connection with your team.”

Washington had a six-week “conditioning camp,” meeting four days a week for two hours a day.

“Football really is our job right now,” Dawson said Monday afternoon, without a trace of regret in his voice. Then he returned to the Warriors’ practice field.

Tuesday night, Washington worked out at Kingston Stadium. That’s where it begins the 2009 season with a showdown game that would seem best-saved for at least early October instead of late August.

Cedar Falls and Washington. Last year the Warriors opened the season with a win in the UNI-Dome over the Tigers, but Cedar Falls won the rematch in a Class 4A state semifinal.
Though wonderful talents like receiver Keenan Davis and quarterback Wyatt Suess graduated, Dawson and the rest of a 40-player varsity team are thinking big.

“I’m looking for my teammates and I to make it to the state championship,” Dawson said. “With that comes hard work and dedication.”

Dawson follows Adrian Arrington and Davis as recent Warrior players who have been wooed by college coaches near and far. Arrington, now with the New Orleans Saints, went to Michigan. Davis is a freshman at Iowa who could — forgive the hype — become a special college player.

Now, in Coach Tony Lombardi’s complex (“Even if a spy came in here, you wouldn’t be able to get anything,” Dawson said.) spread offense, this is a year to showcase a back who was second-team all-state a year ago after compiling 1,483 rushing yards and 28 total touchdowns.

“To get 1,500 rushing yards with our offense throwing for 2,500 yards a year,” Lombardi said, “that’s pretty amazing. And he doesn’t carry the ball with lead blockers very often.

“Andre is a kind of a pro-style back. He runs well from tackle to tackle, but he’s capable of breakaway speed. He’s not going to wow you with jitterbug moves. But he’s kind of like Shonn Greene in that over time he’ll wear defenses down.

“He’s got great vision and acceleration. He finishes runs nicely. At the next level, he’ll be pretty good.”

Dawson said he has a couple of official college visits he wants to take after football season ends. “I’m pretty sure I’ll commit after the playoffs,” he said.

“All seven of my offers right now are in the Midwest. Minnesota, Wisconsin, Cincinnati, Purdue, Kansas, Illinois …” He blanked out on the seventh school, so I said “Iowa?”

“Yeah, Iowa.”

But for now, a big game against Cedar Falls is all-consuming. A big game in August.
