The scholarship total currently stands at 19. I expect that number to fluctuate up and down, mostly up, before the signing day.
I say the number could decrease because we're seeing an extraordinary (even for UW) # of walk-ons emerge as scholarship level players. I wouldn't be shocked if as many as three during that span were awarded free rides for the rest of the career, the most likely suspects being; Chris Maragos, Bradie Ewing, and JJ Watt.
But you know there will be even more attrition like always. A couple of players will transfer because they don't see playing time any time soon, a guy will get dismissed for unforeseen personal problems (ala Thorson, Smith), 2-3 5th year seniors who aren't contributing won't be asked to return, and finally on average you'd expect one decommit from your early list.
Extra variables are Dehn potentially greyshirting and the program over-signing by one.
About 13 new players will be signed in addition to the ones already committed.

So much for a small class.

Dont know if youve seen but there is some moron from a site called Firebrettbielema.com that has said he is contacting potential recruits and telling them to hold off their commitments? What a douche why the hell would you try too sabotage the team you root for?

Updated to include all the commitments to this point.
Also shifted Cromartie from cornerback to free safety. Reports are he's made the switch. Originally Marcus was recruited as a hybrid, he's being asked to gain weight, and we need to address that position for the present and future. He improves the outlook there, but cornerback becomes more of a need this class as a result.

we must be banking on two of Merril/Goins/Johnson/Smith/Fenelus to take the spots opposite AH and Brinkley.

Just from game experience this year Goins automatically gets the 3rd spot.. and I think the 4th spot would be between Fenelus and Smith

Goins is a lot better than Brinkley. Niles got picked apart in the games he started for the most part. He doesn't have real fluid hips and when he bites a little on comebacks he doesn't nearly have enough speed to recover. He's also not as tall as Goins. The best aspect of his game by far is ball skills, but usually when he intercepted a ball it was from a great reaction after the wide open receiver dropped it.

It appears you maybe able to cross Stallon of the list he was already in the doghouse and now apparently has been suspended for the bowl because of academics.

Hey guys, just wondering what the realistic look for a scholarship update is? Right now we are at 19, correct? Are we thinking that Nettles, Hill, and Stallons may potentially add 3 more to this number giving us 22? Any other potential reasons to add to the scholarship amount? Do you think we will give a ride to Maragos?

Maragos is a virtual lock for a scholarship. I mean he's a projected starter going into next season and has already at the very least proven himself to be a legit contributor in meaningful games.
18
Hill declared
19
1-2 of Stallons, Garner, and Nettles remain. Grades can improve. I'm pretty sure evaluations are made semester by semester. Stallons would still have an onus to leave though if he surpassed by Phillips.
20-21
Theus and Cascone are unproductive 5th year seniors not asked to return.
22-23
Bielema has over-signed by at least one in every single class til this juncture.
23-24
Remaining best case projection: McDougald, Appleton, Freeman, Southward, and maybe a surprise late signee (nobody saw Chris Garner coming, almost all of the Sunday Six names came from nowhere).

Thanks for the update, Bern. I see so many people projecting us to be either full or just having one more spot. I didn't think this was right given that we are still recruiting like we have a few spots and just wanted a quick rundown for the possibilities.

Nettles is already gone, he wasnt listed as a student at UW last semester. Tomorrow classes start so we will know more about who is and isnt on the team anymore.

You are correct. Nettles doesn't show up any longer in the student directory, so we can rule him out as a member of the team. Stallons still appears and Garner reappeared. They'll be around as long as they can improve their grades.
All of the soon to be 5th year seniors show up, but that doesn't mean they'll still be on the team after they've completed their 4th year and are on pace to graduate.

Out of curiosity, where to?
