Shaw football player Darwin Cook switches college choice - Cleveland High School Sports News – The Latest Breaking News, Audio Interviews and Scores from The Plain Dealer

Quote:
Shaw senior Darwin Cook has change his mind about where he wants to play college football. Cook (6-1, 180) decommitted to Cincinnati and gave West Virginia his oral commitment on Wednesday.

"I'm not changing my mind again," said Cook, who said he will sign a national letter of intent with the Mountaineers in February. "West Virginia is where I'm going, it's where I want to be."

Cook began hearing from more colleges after giving his non-binding oral commitment to Cincinnati in August. West Virginia was one of those schools, and he decided to visit.

"[Shaw graduate] Will Thomas is at West Virginia on a basketball scholarship," Cook said. "I talked to him on my visit, and he told me it's a great place.

"West Virginia plays a lot of defensive backs and blitzes a lot in its defensive schemes so the opportunity to play there as a freshman are good.

"Plus, there's also a possibility I'll play some slotback, too."

The versatile Cook has rushed for 265 yards and two touchdowns, and has 14 receptions for 411 yards and four touchdowns for unbeaten Shaw (6-0). Defensively, Cook has 67 tackles as well as 14.5 quarterback sacks and 17 hurries.

He plans on majoring in education.

Darwin Cook (East Cleveland, Ohio/Shaw) has had an outstanding senior season. The 6-foot, 185-pounder has helped lead Shaw to a 9-0 record with 20 sacks, 22 receptions and nine touchdowns. Cook originally committed to Cincinnati during the summer.

However as he took his play to the next level, additional scholarship offers came in, including West Virginia, Wisconsin and Purdue.

When Cook switched his commitment to West Virginia less than a month ago, the Mountaineers may have landed one of the steals of the Ohio Class of 2009.
