UGA, Tech in running for Myles | Football recruiting | ajc.com
Quote:
Darren Myles has guided several players through the recruiting process while coaching at Douglass, Crim and Carver-Atlanta.
But this year’s process will be even more special for Myles, whose son, Darren Myles Jr., is a highly-recruited defensive back. The younger Myles has been offered by 16 schools, including Georgia and Georgia Tech.
The 6-foot-3, 185-pound athlete was a first team all-state selection after helping lead Carver-Atlanta to the Class AAA playoffs. He plays quarterback, wide receiver and safety for the Panthers, who are coached by his father.
“I’ve always guided the players as if they were my sons when it came to recruiting,” said Myles, who played running back at Purdue. “It is very special to see and go through it with your own son.”
The Myles family will spend most of the spring break in April touring college campuses at Tennessee, Auburn, Alabama, Kentucky, UCF and Purdue. He said he hasn’t started to narrow his list, but will after making some visits.
As a junior, Myles had 60 tackles, six interceptions and 10 pass breakups. On offense, he had 15 receptions for three touchdowns and passed for two touchdowns and ran for another seven.
“It is great having someone like my dad around who knows the process,” Myles said. “It has been a pretty fun experience so far. I don’t have any favorites yet; they are all equal.”
While the elder Myles is proud of his alma mater and often wears Purdue apparel, he said his son will make the final decision.
“I’m not pushing him in any direction,” Coach Myles said. “What was a good choice for me might not be the best for him. We are going to chose the right situation for him.”
Carver running back Demond Dennis also has been offered by Alabama. Last season, he rushed for 1,605 yards and 13 touchdowns.

Carver safety to tour college campuses during spring break | Football recruiting | ajc.com
Quote:
Carver, Atlanta free safety Darren Myles Jr. should consider chartering an airplane during his upcoming spring break to accomodate an ambitious travel schedule
The 6-foot-2.5, 185-pound junior and his father, Carver coach Darren Myles, will embark on a whirlwind tour of college campuses, beginning with an Apr. 5 stop at Central Florida.
“We plan to go to Central Florida and Florida,” coach Myles said Sunday. “Then we’ll do Tennessee, go to Purdue, come back down to Kentucky and, if there’s time, maybe see Alabama.”
Myles currently holds 15 scholarship offers, most notably from Alabama, Auburn, Central Florida, Georgia, Georgia Tech, Kentucky, Mississippi State, North Carolina State, Purdue, Tennessee, Vanderbilt, Wake Forest and West Virginia.
Florida could be the next program to send an offer.
“[Florida coach] Urban Meyer called me on Wednesday and said he’s watched the film on Darren,” coach Myles said. “For the head coach to call, that tells me his stock has really risen.”
Myles said his son doesn’t plan on naming a group of favorites until he’s taken more visits. To date, Myles has toured Auburn, Georgia and Georgia Tech.
“It’s hard for him to say he likes a school until he actually visits the school, gets to sit down and talk to the coaches, walks the campus and finds out about the academics,” Myles said.
Tech and Georgia made favorable impressions on Myles during recent visits to each institution.
“From what he saw, he really likes both schools,” Myles said. “He likes the fact that [Tech coach] Paul Johnson appears to be very confident and has won everywhere he’s been.
“And he likes the fact that [Georgia] coach [Mark] Richt has stability in place and they’ve been a top 10 team the past few years.
“And he likes the fact that coach Richt appears to be real loyal. When they offer a kid and he commits, they honor that commitment.”
The versatile Myles, who is currently running track, plays free safety, receiver and sees limited action at quarterback for Carver.

Florida making push for Carver defensive back | College recruiting | ajc.com
Quote:
Carver free safety Darren Myles Jr. has officially received a scholarship offer from Florida.
Gainesville, Fla. was just one stop Myles made during a recent whirlwind tour of colleges during his spring break.
“We saw the Gators scrimmage and met with coach [Urban] Meyer,” Myles’ father, Carver coach Darren Myles, said. “Coach Meyer said they want him in the program. So they offered him.
“Darren is intrigued by the offer. Who wouldn’t be intrigued by Florida? Florida was one of the schools he was interested in before his recruiting took off.”
Following a brief stop at Central Florida, the road trip got even better when they began the trek back to Atlanta before heading to Alabama and Tennessee.
Carver running back Demond Dennis, who was tagging along on the journey, received word via phone that Auburn had pulled the triger on an offer.
“Demond has offers from Auburn, Alabama and Miami of Ohio,” coach Myles said. “This is a kid that rushed for over 1,600 yards in just 10 games last season.”
Not to be upstaged, Myles received immediately two new offers.
“We got a call from [assistant head] coach Jon Tenuta of Notre Dame and he said they were offering Darren,” coach Myles said. “Then we got home and opened the mail and Darren had received an offer from Clemson.”
Prior to last week, the 6-foot-2.5, 185-pound Myles already held offers from programs such Alabama, Auburn, Central Florida, Georgia, Georgia Tech, Kentucky, Michigan, Mississippi State, North Carolina State, Purdue, Tennessee, Vanderbilt, Wake Forest and West Virginia.
The younger Myles’ next task is preparing for spring practice at Carver, which begins May 5 and culminates with the spring game on May 16.

More recruiting miles for Myles : Football Recruiting : GoVolsXtra.com
Quote:
As you’re reading this, Darren Myles is preparing to break some recruiters’ hearts.
It’s a necessary evil. Managing 32 scholarship offers is nearly impossible for the 6-foot-2, 180-pounder. So Myles, one of the top defensive back prospects in the southeast, is whittling his list down to 10 to 15 schools.
Tennessee, LSU, Georgia, Georgia Tech, Alabama, West Virginia, Michigan, Rutgers and Purdue will almost certainly be on the preliminary list, according to his father, Darren Myles Sr.
Those are the schools, Myles Sr. said, that have been recruiting his son the hardest. It’s no surprise that there’s that much interest for Myles, especially after a junior season in which he registered 60 tackles, five for a loss, five forced fumbles, five sacks, 16 pass break ups and six interceptions.
UT leads the others in terms of ties to the Myles family. Two former Vols, cornerback Inky Johnson and tailback Jamal Lewis, played for Myles Sr., who is the now the coach at Carver High School in Atlanta.
“It’s definitely a big thought in my mind and big thought in his mind also,” Myles Sr. said of the insight into UT’s program. “He knows how the players get along together.”
The family has been especially impressed with how UT dealt with Johnson’s career-ending shoulder injury suffered in 2006. Johnson is still a significant part of UT’s team, often leading the team in prayer and pep talks. Johnson also receives the same academic and financial support of any active athlete.
“He’s had an opportunity to see how a program treats a player who no longer has any athletic eligibility, like Inky,” Myles Sr. said. “He’s still being taken care of from an academic standpoint.”
The younger Myles admits he gets more information about UT than any other school he’s interested in, seeing that he’s in close contact with Johnson. Myles also visited UT recently.
“I like the University of Tennessee,” said Myles who was selected to play in the Under Armour All-Star Game in Orlando, Fla., in January. “I have a lot of background. I know people that went there. I have a good relationship with the coaches.”
Myles jumped onto the recruiting scene when he was named the most valuable player among defensive backs at a Nike camp held in Tuscaloosa, Ala., this spring. Before, some wondered if Myles was a safety or a cornerback. When he showed the ability to cover some of the region’s top prospects at corner, his recruiting stature soared.
“I would say he’s probably as well rounded as they come in terms of football,” Myles Sr. said. “He’s cerebral. He’s aware. He knows what’s taking place scheme-wise.”

From the GT site. Story about the work he put in in the classroom this summer, and how it paid off with good SAT scores. He lists his most recent offers as Ohio State, Illinois, Louisville and Georgia Tech, and plans to visit Ohio State, Michigan and Notre Dame later in the summer. Comfort level will be a factor, as may distance.

LSU's Miles reaffirms offer to Myles Jr. on weekend visit | College recruiting | ajc.com
Quote:
Darren Myles Jr. met in Baton Rouge on Sunday with LSU head coach Les Miles, who reaffirmed his scholarship offer to safety from Carver of Atlanta.
Myles Jr. then reaffirmed his desire to wait until after his high school season before making a decision but said that LSU was among his handful of favorites.
“Coach Miles told us that safety is a position of need, that he likes his ability to come up and force the run and he felt like he can help right away,” Darren Myles Sr., the player’s father and high school coach, said by phone from Baton Rouge. “He told us he was willing to take his commitment right now. Then he paused.”
And Myles Jr. did not answer.
“The [Miles] followed with, ‘Of course, you don’t have to make a decision now.’ Darren knows not to say anything. We’ve got an understanding. It’s not going to be a surprise. So I said, ‘At this time, we’re not going to commit. But of course, you stand right up there at the top. If we did a top five, you’d be in there. But to commit now is not something we’re ready to do.’ ”
Myles Jr. is rated the No. 5 safety nationally by Rivals.com and No. 12 by Scout.com. He was among several high-end recruits visiting LSU this weekend. Others included linebacker Jarvis Jones of Carver-Columbus, cornerback Branden Smith of Washington and quarterback Russell Shepard of Houston, who is committed to LSU. Myles spent much of his time with Smith, his rival from Atlanta city schools.
Myles Sr. said this was his son’s sixth unofficial visit to a top school. He also has seen Alabama, Auburn, Florida, Georgia and Georgia Tech. He also wants to visit Ohio State and West Virginia, but those probably will not come until the fall as official visits, Myles Sr. said.
Myles Sr. grew up in Louisiana and attended Douglass High of New Orleans and was recruited by LSU in football before going to Purdue. Myles Sr. came to Atlanta’s Douglass High in 1996, when Myles Jr. was 6. But Myles Sr. said that his family’s ties to Louisiana would be no factor in his son’s decision.
“He hasn’t been there since he was 6,” Myles Sr. said. “Darren’s 17 now. Just because we’re from New Orleans, it’s not a shoo-in. It’s what they offer him now as a football player and student-athlete. It has to be a good situation.”

ESPN - Top-flight '09 safeties a versatile bunch - Football Recruiting
Quote:
The only one of the top-five-ranked safeties yet to make a college choice is Darren Myles Jr. (Atlanta, Ga./Carver). He really stands out at free safety. Myles is a sure open-field tackler who is smart enough to use the sideline as the 12th defender. Myles has excellent timing on the blitz and can redirect if necessary.
Myles is one of those rare safeties who can play three-deep zone or halves coverage with equal ability. He displays a real burst when breaking from the middle of the field or from the hash. Myles has the hips and athletic ability to possibly play corner at the next level.
