Scout.com: "Boots on the Ground": Mater Dei vs. Crespi

Quote:
After watching Matt Barkley for the third time, it is interesting to consider his abridged posted offer list in the Scout data base- USC, Cal, Florida, NE, Stanford, TN & UCLA. All other than Florida are what I would describe as more traditional pro style pocket passer systems. To this point, I would love to hear Harbaugh wax philosophical about the style of offense he hopes to establish at Stanford. I have no sense we are pining to be the next Oregon and hoping to attract a Dennis Dixon-type athlete to pass and run, but who knows? If this is the goal, Matt Barkley may not be the best fit. Matt Barkley has exceptional arm strength, reads quickly, makes good decisions and delivers the ball accurately. He has the complete confidence of his teammates and coaches. Barkley didn't master the mental part of the game without work and commitment. Nonetheless, he does need time and his ability to "create time" on his own with his feet is limited. In last night's game, the only contest where I saw him being pressured, his limitations/ opportunities for personal improvement were more clearly seen. Under the pressure from the Crespi defense, he completed less than 50% of his attempted passes, generated only seven yards per attempted pass and was intercepted twice. While these stats against this quality of competition are by no means poor, they are far below his usual standards. As a point of comparison, for the year- games leading up to the Crespi game, Barkley has completed 65% of his passes, generated 11 yards per attempt and has 32 touchdowns with only seven interceptions.

Montana to award Barkley

FOOTBALL: Hall of Fame quarterback will present Newport Beach resident with inaugural honor at the Outback Bowl on Tuesday.

Matt Barkley, a Newport Beach resident and quarterback of the Mater Dei High football team, has been named the winner of the inaugural Joe Montana Quarterback of the Year award.

The honor, given to the nation’s best high school quarterback, will be presented to Barkley by Hall of Fame quarterback Joe Montana on Tuesday at the Outback Bowl (Tennessee vs. Wisconsin) in Tampa, Fla.

In addition to Montana, the award is also selected and presented by Steve Clarkson, president of DeBartolo Sports University.

Barkley, the only junior finalist for the award among six other high school quarterbacks, was evaluated through DeBartolo Sports University’s scouting division, comprised of former college and NFL coaches.

“Matt Barkley is an outstanding quarterback and his performance on the field is exceptional,” Montana said in a press release. “We’re pleased to give our first award to Barkley and see great things from him in the future.”

FOX Sports on MSN - COLLEGE FOOTBALL - Top QB of '09 class headed to USC

Quote:
"Today I called Coach (Pete) Carroll to give him my commitment to becoming a Trojan," Barkley said. "I am very excited about my decision, it is one that my family and I have given serious consideration to and have prayed about a great deal."

The lifelong Trojan fan had been leaning toward USC ever since it had offered a scholarship in the spring, if not well before then, and talked about why he made his decision.

"I chose USC because I simply love the football program and because of the great education I will receive," Barkley said. "There is an incredible tradition of competition, excellence, enthusiasm and winning that I am excited to be a part of. I have the greatest respect for Coach Carroll, Coach (Steve) Sarkisian and the entire coaching staff and what they have accomplished. I look forward to playing football for them."

Barkley said he visited USC on Saturday and came to the conclusion there was no need to wait any longer on announcing a decision, even though he can't sign a letter of intent until February 2009.

ESPN - Barkley selling USC to recruits - Football Recruiting

Quote:
Looking over the recent ESPNU 150, there are a handful of elite players out West still on the board who have yet to make their college commitment. There are also a few players who have verbaled but have said they're open to other schools and will still take official visits in the fall.

At the top of the board is signal-caller Matt Barkley and his commitment to USC is rock solid. Barkley (Santa Ana, Calif./Mater Dei) grew up a Trojan fan with his father Les having captained the schools water polo program in the late '70s.

Barkley committed in late January and has been on the phone doing as much recruiting of other elite players as the Trojan coaching staff. The quarterback is even considering graduating early at Mater Dei so he can enroll at USC in time for spring ball.

One player Barkley has grown close to is the nation's top pass-rusher, Devon Kennard. Kennard (Phoenix/Desert Vista) recently cut his list to USC, Arizona State, California, UCLA and Texas with the Trojans and Sun Devils clearly in the lead.
