Terps Expected to Land Travis Hawkins
by Todd Bradley
7/14/2008
It’s a busy day for Maryland football. In addition to receiving a verbal commitment from Good Counsel senior Caleb Porzel, the Terrapins are expected to received a verbal commitment from Quince Orchard senior Travis Hawkins in the near future.
The 5-foot-10, 181-pound cornerback has over 20 scholarship offers from schools like Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Michigan, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Penn State, Virginia Tech and West Virginia, to name a few.
Hawkins finished last season with 407 rushing yards and 700 receiving yards, but he is expected to play corner in college where his 4.42 speed could be utilized. Hawkins also bench presses 340 pounds, has a 36-inch vertical and runs a 4.34 shuttle.

Another week-old update that I had missed until now.
ESPN - Quince Orchard musings - MdVarsity.com
Quote:
Hawkins name has surfaced lately as many have speculated that the defensive back has committed to the University of Maryland, but Mencarini assured me that is not the case and added that Hawkins is currently on vacation.
The 5-foot-10, 180-pound Hawkins has narrowed his choices though. Maryland, Georgia, Virginia Tech, West Virginia, Tennessee, Michigan and Oregon are the seven schools Hawkins will choose from.
As to when Hawkins will commit, Mencarini said he does not think his star athlete has a timetable.

ESPN - Kirkpatrick leads class of big, fast CBs - Football Recruiting

Though not in the elite class with the aforementioned prospects, the state of Maryland does claim another highly ranked corner in Travis Hawkins (Gaithersburg, Md./Quince Orchard). Our No. 12-ranked corner, the instinctive Hawkins lacks the measurables that some of the highly noted corners in this class have, but he plays bigger and is a very physical underneath guy.

Hawkins has official visits set to Oregon, Penn State and Maryland the next three weekends. His visit to Michigan left a good impression.
"I liked it a lot," Hawkins said. "They are going to have a good football team. Academically Michigan stood out. I feel I could go in there and compete pretty fast."
However it may not be easy for the Wolverines to beat out Hawkins' home-state school.
"I don't have a favorite, but my mom wants me to go to Maryland," Hawkins said. "That might play a role. I'll make my decision sometime in November."

Defensive back Travis Hawkins (Gaithersburg, Md./Prince Orchard) followed up his official visit to Michigan the weekend of Oct. 4 with a trip to the West Coast this past weekend on an official visit to Oregon.
"It went well," Hawkins said of his Oregon visit. "What I expected is what I saw. I liked it out there. I liked the facilities and the coaching staff. The players are real cool."
When asked which visit he liked best, Michigan or Oregon, Hawkins said, "I liked the Michigan academics better. But other than that, Oregon was better."

Maryland About to Add a Top Defensive Back? - Josh Barr's Recruiting Insider
Quote:
Quince Orchard standout Travis Hawkins will announce his college decision on Thursday, according to Cougars Coach Dave Mencarini, and I wouldn't be surprised if Maryland makes a nice addition to its recruiting class.
Among the other schools Hawkins is considering are Michigan, Oregon and Penn State. He was scheduled to visit Penn State two weekends ago but had to postpone the trip after the Cougars' game was rained out from Friday to Saturday night.
Hawkins currently is sidelined by a sprained ankle, but Mencarini has said Hawkins could return to action in the playoffs.

ESPN - Breaking News: Hawkins picks Maryland - MdVarsity.com
Quote:
October 30, 2008 11:54 AM
By Mike Loveday
Travis Hawkins, Quince Orchard's star football player, will attend the University of Maryland, he announced at a press conference today at noon.
The 5-foot-10, 190-pound athlete chose Maryland after narrowing his list to five schools in August. Maryland, Penn State, Georgia, Tennessee and Oregon all made the list.
ESPN's Scouts Inc. has Hawkins listed at the No. 12 cornerback in the nation.
MDVarsity.com will have a more detailed story about Hawkins' commitment later today.
Hawkins has played mostly defensive back for Quince Orchard this season and has been out with an ankle sprain for the past two weeks. Head coach Dave Mencarini said he expects Hawkins back for the playoffs.
Hawkins was Mr. Everything for the Cougars last season - rushing for 407 yards while making 25 catches for 700 yards. He also led the team through the first round of regional playoffs last year from the quarterback position when the regular starter was injured.
Hawkins took official visits to Oregon on Oct. 10 and Michigan on Oct. 3. He had an official visit to Maryland scheduled for Nov. 21.
