Kiski Area's Gunn has work to do - Pittsburgh Tribune-Review

Kiski Area's Bret Gunn has caught the attention of college coaches, but his stepfather would like more of his attention on the classroom.
Gunn, a senior-to-be who plays running back and safety for the Cavaliers, has popped up on a few recruiting Web sites and is being scouted by several Division I schools.

But he has unfinished business before he can think about training camp in August. He begins summer school this week in an effort to get his academics straight for the upcoming season.

"If he gets his grades together, he has a big opportunity," said Ed Gunn, the stepfather. "Otherwise, he's going to blow it. There is no reason for him to be in this situation."

According to Scout.com, several colleges are showing interest in Gunn, including Buffalo, Connecticut, Florida State, Ohio State, North Carolina, Pitt, Syracuse and Virginia. But the speedy, 5-foot-11, 165-pounder has no scholarship offers yet.
"At this rate, (the colleges) are going to stop looking at him," Ed Gunn said. "If he doesn't pass summer school, he could miss the early part of the season."

Ed Gunn wanted to share his son's situation, much like Tonie Clemons, the mother of former Valley receiver/defensive back Toney Clemons, did.

She made the Valley News Dispatch aware of her son's academic ineligibility during his freshman track season. Her motive was not only to embarrass him, but also to make him shift toward a more positive lifestyle.

It worked out, as Toney Clemons improved in the classroom and later earned a football scholarship to Michigan, where he could start at wide receiver as a sophomore this fall.

"The only stat that matters is what you do in the classroom," Toney Clemons told SI.com. "That (article) made me realize what it means to be a student-athlete. It was probably the best thing that happened to me. It taught me that it could all be taken away quickly."

Gunn did not travel with his teammates Friday to a 7-on-7 passing camp in Ellicott City, Md.

"Bret and I had a long conversation about (grades)," Kiski Area first-year coach Harvey Smith said. "I tried to explain to him where he stands and the opportunity before him. He needs to do what he needs to do."

Gunn also is a track standout for Kiski Area, particularly in the long jump and 400-meter relay.

Last year, he scored touchdowns via rushing, receiving and interception return. He has been timed at 4.3 seconds in the 40-yard dash.

When asked about the prospect of possibly having to sit out due to grades, Gunn said, "I don't really know too much about that right now."

Gunn, who changed his last name from Williams last year, said during the track season that he'd like to go to Pitt. His stepbrother, Adam Gunn, a former Kiski Area quarterback, currently plays linebacker for the Panthers.

Ed Gunn said Adam and his other son, Vance, a former Greensburg Salem football standout, have talked to Bret about grades.

Smith hopes Gunn straightens out his situation and is ready for the season. He said Kiski Area will have a more balanced offense this year. Last year, it was geared toward the pass with standout Josh Vick at quarterback.

But with Gunn as the featured back and talented receivers in Jeff Jackson and Tarique Godson, Smith said to expect the Cavaliers to "by and large be closer to a 50-50 team."
