By C. Guthrie at the Rutgers site. Lowry has been offered by Maryland, Rutgers, Pitt, and Cincinnati with Maryland showing the most interest at this point. Michigan State, Boston College, and South Carolina are also in contact. Academics will be the #1 factor.

Jarel Lowery, a first-team Herald News All-Area and All-Passaic defensive tackle from Paterson Catholic, has given an oral commitment to play football at Syracuse.

The 6-foot-4, 283-pound Lowery chose Syracuse after visiting the Big East school this past weekend. He said he had some interest from Maryland and Wake Forest, but no definite offers, as well as firm offers from several Division I-AA schools, including Delaware, Rhode Island and Villanova.

"I decided to go (to Syracuse) because it was a whole family atmosphere," Lowery said Monday. "I trusted the coaches. The players were real cool. It was somewhere where I could spend the next four or five years of my life. It felt like the perfect fit for me."
