James Gayle, a 6-5, 225-pound rising senior defensive end, has a box full of letters from Ohio State, Tennessee, Arkansas, Liberty and Holy Cross. If he sounds familiar to some longtime Peninsula residents, he should. Gayle is the nephew of Shaun Gayle, a former Bethel standout defensive back who went on to play at Ohio State and spent 12 seasons in the National Football League.

James Gayle, a 6-foot-4, 220-pound defensive end from Bethel High School in Hampton, has become the ninth football prospect to commit to Virginia Tech for 2009.

Gayle was timed in 4.5 seconds for 40 yards at a recent one-day Tech camp and received a scholarship offer on the spot. He said he had nine offers from Division I-A or I-AA programs, including North Carolina State, Syracuse, Purdue and ECU.

Gayle also attended a one-day camp at Virginia and was supposed to return to Charlottesville but decided to end his recruiting.

Gayle's father and uncle played at Ohio State.
