Rivals.com Football Recruiting - From the Road: Performing in the playoffs

Washington is still waiting for his recruitment to explode, his teammate Marcus Witherspoon ended his process a long time ago. The Michigan commit definitely looks like a top DI prospect physically. Although he's listed as a linebacker, he spent most of the day at defensive end, and used an assortment of moves to harass the Immaculata quarterback and running game. He'll likely start off as a linebacker with the Wolverines, but don't be surprised if he grows out of that position after a year or two in their strength and conditioning program.

LATEST NEWS: Holy Spirit all-state linebacker Marcus Witherspoon wavering on going to Michigan?
Quote:
By MICHAEL McGARRY Staff Writer, 609-272-7185
Published: Thursday, January 3, 2008
Marcus Witherspoon thought the recruiting process was over when he verbally committed last summer to play college football at the University of Michigan.
It may be just beginning for the Holy Spirit High School senior.
Since Witherspoon's verbal commitment, Michigan coach Lloyd Carr has resigned and most of the Wolverine assistants are gone.
Witherspoon, a standout linebacker, isn't quite sure of his decision as he once was.
Holy Spirit coach Bill Walsh said Michigan is still Witherspoon's No. 1 choice, but he will make an official visit to the University of Tennessee on Jan. 11.
"Things happen," Witherspoon said. "I can't control things. It's just a matter of making the right decisions."

New emphasis for Witherspoon on UT visit : Football Recruiting : GoVolsXtra.com
Quote:
“Now, I don’t know the coaches there,” he said. “I’ve got to get to know them so I was like, ‘Why not give the other coaches a chance or Tennessee a chance?’ They’re good people as well.”
UT’s chance to sway Witherspoon’s decision comes this weekend when he takes an official visit to Knoxville.
The 6-foot-2, 215-pound Witherspoon said he never forgot about the Vols throughout recruiting, even after he committed to Michigan.
“Tennessee was always a good choice, was always in the back of my mind,” he said. “I made an early decision, but things happened so I’ve given everybody a chance.”

H.S. football: Six schools to visit Holy Spirit's Marcus Witherspoon this week
Quote:
The recruiting of Holy Spirit High School football standout Marcus Witherspoon will intensify this week.
Representatives from six college football powers - USC, Penn State, Rutgers, Tennessee, Michigan State and Michigan - are slated to visit Spirit in the next few days to speak with Witherspoon, according to Spirit coach Bill Walsh.
"We're going to have an interesting week," Walsh said.
Witherspoon, a standout linebacker, took an official visit to Tennessee this weekend. He could not be reached for a comment Sunday because he was returning from the visit.
Witherspoon verbally committed to Michigan last summer, but Michigan coach Lloyd Carr resigned after the season and most of the Wolverine assistants are gone. Former West Virginia coach Rich Rodriguez is the new Michigan coach.
Walsh said Michigan is still Witherspoon's top choice.
"He's just exploring other options," Walsh said.

From the Michigan site. Witherspoon says that he talked to coach Rodriguez, and things went well. He also says that his visit to Tennessee went very well, and that he will have a hard choice to make. He will wit until signing day to make his final choice.

Sam Carchidi: Witherspoon will go with his gut by Feb. 6 | Philadelphia Inquirer | 01/22/2008
Quote:
What's new in the recruiting war for South Jersey's best football prospect, Holy Spirit High linebacker/defensive end Marcus Witherspoon?
Witherspoon said early last night that he would attend Michigan, Tennessee or Rutgers.
Yes, Rutgers is a late entry in the recruiting picture.
You may recall that Witherspoon made an oral commitment to Michigan before the season. But when Wolverines coach Lloyd Carr resigned in November, Witherspoon started to have second thoughts.
"Right now, I'm not sure what I'm going to do," he said. "All I can say is, I will sign on Feb. 6," the first day recruits can sign binding letters of intent.
Witherspoon recently enjoyed his visit to Tennessee, and Rutgers coach Greg Schiano paid him a visit last week at Holy Spirit in Absecon.
"He's a good person, a very good person," Witherspoon said. "I would love to play under him, but we shall see."
Witherspoon, a 6-foot-2, 225-pound senior who made a staggering 27 sacks last fall, also said he felt comfortable with new Michigan coach Rich Rodriguez, who recently visited him at Holy Spirit.
What will be the deciding factor in his decision?
"Most likely, my gut," he said. "And I'm praying about it."
