Thanks to a unique situation, Rutgers picked up its first football recruit for 2009 when junior Mohamed Sanu of South Brunswick High School gave the Knights a verbal commitment.
Sanu, a 6-2, 195-pounder, starred at quarterback and safety last fall for head coach Rick Mantz. Though a junior academically, Sanu's age will make him ineligible for high school football this year (he will be able to practice with the team but can't play in games). He will enroll early at Rutgers in January of next year, Mantz said.
"He's an incredible athlete," Mantz said. "He has a cannon for an arm. He can even punt a football 70 yards. He's a good-sized kid who can play almost anywhere and he has the desire to succeed."

Vikings' Sanu impressed Rutgers years back | Home News Tribune Online
Quote:
Sanu, who had made visits to Rutgers and UConn, was only offered a scholarship by Rutgers, but was expected to receive offers from Penn State, Notre Dame, North Carolina, Georgia Tech, Temple, Syracuse, Iowa and others.
"Rutgers, Syracuse, UConn, Georgia Tech and a few others wanted me as a quarterback," Sanu said. "That's was my goal, my dream, to play quarterback at a major college. I jumped at the Rutgers offer. I love the environment there, I love the way coach (Greg) Schiano has built the program and I want to be a part of what's going on there."

"Mohamed has always been an Honor Roll student," Jabbie said. "Last semester, he missed it by one C, but he made a promise to work harder and get back on it the next semester."

When I was a freshman, coach (Mark) Prelewicz made an appeal to the state to get me another year," Sanu said. "I was hoping they would say yes, but it didn't work out. So when I was a sophomore, the plan was to go to a prep school for a year, but coach Prelewicz talked to Rutgers, who had expressed an interest in me when I was young. If everything fell into place, I could get a scholarship there and go as a greenshirt. So that's been the plan for a while and I'm grateful it worked out that way."
Sanu, who accepted the Rutgers offer two weeks ago, credits his former and current coaches with molding him into the player he has become.
"I was fortunate because I developed under coach Prelewicz and coach Johnson (quarterbacks coach Jeff Johnson) when they were here and then with coach Mantz," Sanu said.
"The sky is the limit for Mohamed," Prelewicz said. "Rutgers wants him to play quarterback, but Mohamed is the kind of kid who is willing and who has the ability to play anywhere — receiver, defense, punter.
"His attitude, his demeanor as a player and as a person is going to take him places."
