What Mallory lacks in size he makes up for with good quickness, speed and versatility as running back prospect. He possesses a shorter, slighter frame but is a bit rangy and should continue to fill out is long body. Despite his lack of great size, he is tough, feisty and pound-for-pound a strong kid on the football field. Projects best in a spread offense with heavy zone schemes to better utilize his great quickness and hips in space. Shows good initial patience and vision through the hole. Utilizes his smaller size and good body control to pick and slide through the small run creases. Very shifty and slippery to wrap up through traffic. Has great lateral foot-quickness but avoids dancing and is more of a decisive runner. Has a feel for the cutback and can hit it sharply without losing much in transition. Lacks great YAC but this kid will lower the shoulder and runs hard. Low center of gravity, balance and deceptively strong frame allows him to break through arm tackles when he hits top speed. Shows some burst and good straight-line speed when he finds a north-south seam. Good openfield vision and does not gear down much when cutting. However, at times he looks a bit quicker than fast and not overly explosive with a great second gear. There were a few occasions on film where he was tracked down with good angles and his football speed did not quite match up with his 40 time. Does not project to be a high-carry back at the next level with his current size; durability and YAC are a concern. Overall, Mallory is a potentially a good change-of-pace back at the next level, and a skill player offensive coordinators could use creatively in space for potential mismatches. Good hands and receiving skills out the backfield. Return skills in the kicking game are excellent and add to his upside and good versatility as prospect. Sleeper on the recruiting trail.

"I like what they are doing at Ole Miss," Darian Mallary said. "They run the same offense my high school does and I think I could go there and play right away. What they did at the Swamp (beating Florida) was really impressive. I think they are moving in the right direction." The Rebels were Mallary's first scholarship offer and he says that they, as well as Iowa, are recruiting hardest.
