Texas defensive end commits to Purdue

In one year, 6-foot-4 Eric Mebane went from weighing 170 pounds to tipping the scales at 210.

And with his growth spurt, a few more colleges began to show interest in the defensive end from Bowie High School in Arlington, Texas.

But Mebane has ended the recruiting process by announcing that he has verbally committed to play at Purdue.

"I decided to jump on board," Mebane said Tuesday. "I always wanted to make my decision kind of early. Now I can concentrate on leading my high school to a state title.

"I picked Purdue mainly because I liked the academics. It has a real good business school and that's what I want to major in. Plus, it's a real good football program and it's in the Big Ten. I like the competition, knowing you're going up against Michigan, Ohio State and Penn State."
