In his first season as football coach at George Jenkins High School, it didn't take long for Pat Dooley to recognize Xavier Melton's talents.
"Very quickly we were able to identify that this young man has the potential to be a special individual competing at the highest level," Dooley said of the 6-foot-3, 275-pound defensive tackle.
"He was the player all of our opponents had to game plan for. He was a dominant player in the middle for us."
Purdue's coaching staff witnessed the same thing. After taking an official visit to the West Lafayette campus last weekend, Melton gave the Boilermakers a verbal commitment after returning home to Lakeland, Fla.
