"A potential sleeper" is the assessment by Scouts Inc. on recent Purdue football commitment Gavin Roberts, a safety out of Somerset, N.J.
While "sleeper" sometimes isn't the adjective fans want to hear, the more one reads Roberts' profile at ESPN.com, the more promising the 6-foot-1, 190-pounder sounds.
"He is a rare athlete who flashes the physicality of a strong safety and the coverage skills of a corner," the analysis states. "... We like his aggressiveness and physicality as a run supporter. Shows potential to be a solid 8th defender in the box and an intimidating presence over the middle against the run or pass. He is solid open-field tackler who can bring the wood.
"Our main concern with Roberts is that he appears quicker than he is fast and might lack the recovery speed against faster Division 1 receivers. Pure range to play over the top as a true 'cover 2' safety is a question mark. With that said, Roberts possesses enough athletic ability and natural tools to be worth a team's investment for his scheme versatility alone."
