High School Notebook: Top football players narrowing down lists

Not only does Norwin's Mike Shanahan have to pick a college, he has to pick a sport.

Shanahan (6-5, 200), a receiver in football and guard in basketball, has Division I scholarship offers in both sports. He was being recruited more for football, but his basketball stock seems to be on the rise with a good summer on the AAU and camp circuits.

West Virginia, Stanford and Duke were among the schools that offered for football. Akron, Lehigh, Air Force and Robert Morris had offered for basketball.

Shanahan plans to pick a sport in August and then a college.

Shanahan, a 6-foot-5, 200-pound senior receiver/defensive back, decided this summer he wanted to play basketball in college, turning down football scholarship offers from West Virginia, Stanford, Georgia Tech and a few others.

But Shanahan has changed his mind and now thinks he might want to play football in college. Pitt offered him a scholarship a few weeks ago. West Virginia also is recruiting him again for football.

Norwin WR Shanahan picks Pitt - Pittsburgh Tribune-Review

Pitt has received a verbal commitment from Norwin receiver Mike Shanahan, who chose the Panthers over West Virginia and Stanford.

The 6-foot-5, 210-pound Shanahan, who had 35 receptions for 709 yards and 11 touchdowns this season, made an official visit to Pitt this past weekend.

"I want to be part of the turnaround at Pitt," Shanahan said. "When I visited Pitt, everything just felt right."

Norwin two-sport star Mike Shanahan had difficulty deciding what sport he wanted to pursue in college.

He accepted a scholarship to play football at Pitt but may have the opportunity to play basketball for the Panthers, as well. Shanahan said Pitt basketball coach Jamie Dixon was in touch with his father shortly after Shanahan committed to Pitt.

"I might have a chance to walk on at Pitt if everything goes alright," said Shanahan, who had nine basketball and eight football scholarship offers. "(The football coaches) said if I wanted to walk on, it would be all right. They said it was fine as long as they thought I could contribute and not sit on the bench."
