'10 PA ATH Anthony Gonzalez (Pittsburgh Verbal)
Rivals
Scout
Athlete
Bethlehem (PA) Liberty
Ht: 6-foot-3
Wt: 195 lbs
Class: 2010 (High School)
themorningcall.com: Nittany Lines Blog
Quote:
Anthony Gonzalez, the Bethlehem Liberty High School junior quarterback who led his team to the Pennsylvania Class 4A football championship last Saturday, will get a scholarship offer from Penn State, we have learned.
That scholarship offer could arrive as early as mid-January.
Gonzalez is 6-2, 195 with good speed. He ran for more than 200 yards in the state title-game overtime victory over Bethel Park of suburban Pittsburgh. Gonzalez (at left) this year rushed for 1,697 yards with 24 TDs and completed 114 of 206 passes for 1,570 yards, 12 TDs and four interceptions.
He is one of several outstanding Pennsylvania schoolboy quarterbacks in the Class of 2010. Penn State also is targeting others such as Paul Jones of McKees Rocks and Kyle Smith of Lancaster Catholic. The Lions also just landed a Virginia 4-star dual-threat QB in Kevin Newsome of the Class of 2009. Newsome will enroll in January and likely be Daryll Clark's successor in the fall of 2010.
Gonzalez is a dual-threat QB, and that appears to be the theme of the Penn State offense for the immediate future. I think Gonzalez might need help with his passing if he expects to ever start at QB for Penn State.
Then again, Gonzalez also is a fine defensive back who secured the state title with an interception in overtime. He had 96 tackles and four interceptions this year. He is just a heckuva athlete who could end up at any of several positions in Division I football.

Liberty's Gonzalez leads AAAA all-state team - National Sports | Centre Daily
Quote:
In the moments following his team's 28-21 overtime victory over Bethel Park in the PIAA Class AAAA football championship game, Bethlehem Liberty coach Tim Moncman didn't seem to know how to handle the moment.
Moncman wandered from player to player, stopping briefly for a hug, then moved off in another random direction for another random encounter.
Once he spotted some reporters, however, he got right to the point. "What do you call him?" Moncman said of Anthony Gonzalez, his junior quarterback and defensive back. "He's Superman." Gonzalez carried an AAAA-record 33 times in the title game. His one-handed, rolling interception ended the overtime game.
Gonzalez's ability and versatility landed him a first-team spot on The Associated Press Class AAAA all-state team and the player of the year award.

A solid student with a 3.4 grade-point average, Gonzalez will have no trouble getting into just about any college interested in recruiting him. Penn State and Pittsburgh already are in hot pursuit, with dozens more to follow next year.
Until then, Gonzalez would prefer to focus on his unfinished high school career.

By B Lichtenfels. Video interview with Anthony, who now holds offers from Penn State and Pitt. He would like to play QB and adds that he would like to hear from some spread teams like Michigan, WVU and Oregon. Grew up a PSU fan.

Pitt is first official offer for Liberty's Gonzalez - Western PA Football By Joshua Funk
Quote:
According to an e-mail from Liberty assistant coach Jim Tkach, Gonzalez already has an official offer in writing from Pitt. Northwestern, Illinois, and Missouri, Tkach said, are also showing interest.
Rivals.com reports other Division-1 colleges interested in the 6'3, 190-pound dual threat quarterback include Alabama, Boston College, Penn State, Syracuse, Virginia, and West Virginia.
Rivals also reported that Gonzalez has an official offer from Penn State. But as of Monday, Tkach said, Penn State had not offered Gonzalez a scholarship.

The Nittany Lions have a commitment from one of Big Ten country’s top quarterback prospects: P.J. Jones from McKees Rocks (Pa.) Sto-Rox. But that doesn’t mean the Penn State staff is done looking at class of 2010 quarterbacks.

April 6, 2009
Quarterback Anthony Gonzalez from Bethlehem (Pa.) Liberty has a host of scholarship offers - including one from Penn State. Gonzalez was in State College over the weekend and told Nittany Network he liked what he saw.
“It went good,” Gonzalez said. “They showed us around the facilities. I got to watch them practice. The stadium is beautiful.”
Gonzalez has been to Penn State before, but this was the first time in a number of years. He said the last time he was in State College was when he was in sixth or seventh grade.

By Matt Alkire. Clemson has offered. Anthony talks about how he doesn't know much about Clemson and will have to check them out this summer...also enjoyed his Maryland visit and says the campus is beautiful, the coaches were really good with him, and talks about competing since Maryland received a commitment from '10 PA QB Tyler Smith.

The Nittany Lions have a commitment from one quarterback: P.J. Jones from McKees Rocks (Pa.) Sto-Rox. However, they don’t plan to stop there.
Joe Paterno is looking for two quarterbacks this recruiting season and would be content for both to hail from Pennsylvania if he can land Anthony Gonzalez from Bethlehem (Pa.) Liberty.
Gonzalez is well aware of Jones’ commitment to the Nittany Lions. He says it will not impact his decision.
“Wherever I go I will have to compete,” Gonzalez said. “So [Jones’ commitment] doesn’t bother me.”

Scout.com: Gonzalez Will Make Summer Visits
6/2
By Matt Alkire. Plans on visiting Florida State, Clemson, Illinois, Purdue (said they'll offer), and Oregon is also a possibility. Doesn't have a favorite but Anthony says he is definitely interested in Florida State, Illinois, PSU, and Maryland...has yet to visit FSU or Illinois but says PSU and Maryland are both beautiful schools.

ESPN.com - QB Gonzalez narrows his list to five
8/5
Quote:
QB Gonzalez narrows his list to five
ESPNU 150 Watch List quarterback Anthony Gonzalez (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) has narrowed his list of approximately a dozen scholarship offers down to five schools. He has scheduled official visits to most of the five.
Gonzalez plans to visit Florida State the weekend of Sept. 6 when the Seminoles host Miami. He has also scheduled a visit to Oregon the weekend of Sept. 26 when the Ducks host Cal and will head to Illinois the weekend of Oct. 3 when Penn State is in Champaign.
"I'll visit Missouri (Oct. 24) when they play Texas," Gonzalez said. "But I still have to set that one up. My visit to Pitt might be (Nov. 14) when they play Notre Dame if that game is at Pitt."
The 6-foot-2, 210-pounder has been Liberty's starting quarterback since the beginning of his sophomore season. He passed for 1,200 yards and rushed for close to 600 that season. Gonzalez also led Liberty to a 15-1 record and a state championship his junior season. He passed for 1,580 yards and 12 touchdowns while rushing for 1,670 yards and 24 touchdowns. He was only intercepted four times.
When asked to name his favorite at this point, Gonzalez said, "I'd have to say Pitt and Florida State right now since I've been to those two and I haven't been to the others yet."
Gonzalez is planning to take all five official visits, though that is not set in stone. "If I go to a school and it blows my mind I might commit," Gonzalez said. "But if not, I'll announce my decision after I take my five visits."

Liberty senior quarterback Anthony Gonzalez got to see a classic Miami and Florida State college football game in person in on Sept. 7.
Florida State lost, 38-34, but that’s not the reason Gonzalez won’t be packing his bags and relocating to Tallahassee next fall.
Gonzalez is just in love with the University of Pittsburgh, which he verbally committed to today to end all the speculation.
“I just feel more comfortable,” Gonzalez said. “The place is just like Liberty. The coaches care about you. I feel like I can play right away. That’s my biggest thing. I’m not used to sitting.”
“I just want to get after it and play early. I’m pretty confident.”
