By M Alkire. Committed to Georgia. He says Georgia and Penn State were neck and neck, but that he and his mother felt more comfortable with the Georgia staff and philosophy. He also had family in the area, which increased his comfort level there as well.

I hope Jordan will get the academic guidance and education at Georgia that he thinks he is getting. The education is there, but the guidance has been lacking there.

Isn't there a former Penn State player who is now an academic counselor at UGA or has something to do with academics? I don't want to throw a name out because I'm not sure it would be the right one.

Wally Richardson.

UGA is a solid school. I'm talking more about the academic counseling. UGA's graduation rate for football blows.

36% in the 2007 NCAA graduation report. That ain't bad . . . for the SEC.

The problem with those numbers though is that they're always 6+ years old. Since Richt took over in 2001, that means that the next set of numbers will be the first one that actually concern his recruits.

That doesn't mean UB is wrong at all, it's just a personal pet peeve of mine.

I agree, to an extent. We'll have to wait to see Richt's numbers...but he's another in the SEC that will take 30-33 guys in a class with the advance knowledge that a bunch will not qualify. That's indicative of the SEC's "focus" on academics.

In fact, I'm pretty sure Knowshon Moreno was a borderline qualifier...PSU fans were wondering why they weren't pursuing him as hard as they would have liked...his grades scared teams off. At least those teams that care about academics.

I don't think this is quite right -- that 36% grad rate I quoted for UGA is a 4 class average which I believe starts with the class of '00, so Richt's recruits account for 1/2 - 3/4 of it (depending on how much of that class of '01 he recruited). So his recruits are being measured here; we just don't know yet whether they are pulling up or dragging down the grad rate of his predecessor.

The four class average is for the preceding four classes (ie. '97 and onwards). There is no data in that report from anyone from the class of 2001 or later.

No matter how you break it down - 36% graduation rate is pathetic and is very on par with the others in that league absent Vandy and very few others.
