The next big thing?
Wearing slightly faded jeans that hang low but comfortably over white sneakers, Tavon Austin glides through the busy hallway of Dunbar High.
Under his left arm, he carries a notebook and a binder. On his wrists are names tattooed in dark, cursive lettering. His grandmother's name, Louann, is on his right wrist. His mother's name, Cathy, is on his left.
Girls walk up to him and pull at his oversized hoodie, which drapes loosely over a lime-green collared polo shirt. They giggle as they say his name. He can't help but smile.
Farther down the hall, some football players lean casually against dark blue, rusting lockers. The afternoon sun shines through and illuminates their laughing faces.
When Austin approaches the group, he blends in easily, trading barbs and slapping hands with friends. Austin is soft-spoken, but when he talks, everyone listens.
It's good to be Tavon Austin.
College coaches are enamored of Dunbar's superstar running back, and they hope to bring his skills and speed to their campuses in 2009.

Tavon realizes it is early in the process, but he calls Maryland, WVU, FSU, and Clemson his early favorites.

What? No Illinois on that list (yet)? I thought Locksley had an office at Dunbar.

I'm not certain that Austin has received a written offer.

It has been confirmed that Austin has an offer.
Smallish, but looks like a good prospect.

I'm hopeful we can get him, this kid is electric with the ball in his hands. I don't think he'll end up at Illinois because of the wide net that Zook casts, he isn't going to choose a college with 2 or 3 other RBs in the same class I'm confident of that. I doubt Virginia will be the main competition for him, doesn't seem like a good fit and they have an '09 RB commit. At this point, I would say Penn State only really has to deal with West Virginia [and their offense], and Maryland [in-state]. I hope we can get him, he can certainly be useful as a KR and all-around threat since DWill will be gone.
I just can't figure out if the staff, after losing Michael Shaw last year is going hard for Tavon [LJ SR.] or Jeremiah Young [PA - LJ SR.]. They want one of them for sure, and LJ SR. seems determined to get a player or player(s) from Steelton and has been paying attention but like I said Tavon is simply electric. Young doesn't have an offer yet, but I know LJ SR. has been down at the school 3 or 4 times and has talked with Jeremiah. They have a nice DT prospect [Jordan Hill-been to camp at Penn State in '07, really loves Penn State], ATH [QB Andre Campbell], WR/DB prospect, OG prospect and Young. Team is simply loaded with players capable of playing 1A collegiate ball despite weaker H.S. competition. Jeremiah Young and Jordan Hill have been to numerous games over the years and have had nothing but good things to say. I think Tavon is going to show up either on the 5th or 19th for the spring game.

That was not in order.
I would take Austin over Jeremiah Young any day of the week and twice on Saturday. He plays a lot like a certain Devine from WV, minus the baggage.

Completely agree...I can't see any baggage. People have been telling this kid he is a absolute stud since he was 14-15 and he has stayed relatively humble and has a mind outside of his football talents. Has a good head on his shoulders, he is realistic about his abilities on the football field and wants to get a good education in case the next level isn't meant to be, isn't concerned with being the star RB or main guy at RB just wants to show his abilities and be able to touch the ball in a variety of ways [ie out of backfield, KR, RB, slot - could happen at Penn State].
It truly sounds like he is just looking for the right fit as a person. Who is going to be honest with him and wants him whether he is injured or not. Sounds like a genuinely good kid who doesn't want it to be all about his athletic ability, hopefully Penn State can be that place. He really seems to be all about family as well, which is always good. He is amazing on the field though!
