I think a certain friend of his might be doing some work on him. Coincidence rumors were rampant that Hawkins verballed to Maryland before the return of one Jason Ankrah from his trip to PSU and now Hawkins didn't verbal? He still might end up a Terp, but the longer this goes and the worse Maryland looks on the field this year ...

What was really wierd about that report was that hawkind wasn't even in the state. Why would he go to Florida and verbal to MD down there?
I hope you're right, UB. With the loss of Love and some of our WR prospects, landing Hawkins would certainly fill those holes nicely.

Too bad MD is in the sea of mediocrity called the ACC -- even if they suck, their record could end up being not so bad

That si the problem with the bowl system as we speak. Kids actually thought Maryland was decent last year because they went to a bowl. The program blows and there is no end in sight.

It's shocking how mediocre Fridge has been after Vanderlinen's recruits left the program. It's even more shocking that recruits haven't caught on.
Oh wait, who pilfers Maryland when they want to...

Another week-old update that I had missed until now.
ESPN - Quince Orchard musings - MdVarsity.com
Quote:
Hawkins name has surfaced lately as many have speculated that the defensive back has committed to the University of Maryland, but Mencarini assured me that is not the case and added that Hawkins is currently on vacation.
The 5-foot-10, 180-pound Hawkins has narrowed his choices though. Maryland, Georgia, Virginia Tech, West Virginia, Tennessee, Michigan and Oregon are the seven schools Hawkins will choose from.
As to when Hawkins will commit, Mencarini said he does not think his star athlete has a timetable.

That list is innacurate. Michigan is replaced by PSU.
At this point, it looks like it doesn't really matter, though.

ESPN blog: Hawkins cuts list to 5:
Quote:
The 5-foot-10, 180-pound Hawkins said he trimmed his list of prospective schools down to five last week with Maryland, Penn State, Georgia, Tennessee and Oregon all making the cut.
Hawkins said he has an official visit to Georgia set for Sept. 27, when the Bulldogs play Alabama. Hawkins added the he plans to visit Penn State on Oct. 18 when the Nittany Lions play Michigan.

IMO, this is MD/PSU with UT as the darkhorse.

ESPN - Kirkpatrick leads class of big, fast CBs - Football Recruiting

Though not in the elite class with the aforementioned prospects, the state of Maryland does claim another highly ranked corner in Travis Hawkins (Gaithersburg, Md./Quince Orchard). Our No. 12-ranked corner, the instinctive Hawkins lacks the measurables that some of the highly noted corners in this class have, but he plays bigger and is a very physical underneath guy.

Doubt it now that we kicked Ankrah to the curb.

UB - I felt that way, too, initially.
But where is Ankrah going to school next year?
If I'm Hawkins, my decision has ZERO to do with Ankrah, as I won't be following him to JUCO or prep.

After seeing the way Ankrah's attempt to commit was reported, I wonder if he's discussed it with Hawkins by painting PSU as a villain here or by being being frank about his grades. If the former, that could make it difficult for LJ Sr to explain it to Hawkins without calling his teammate a dummy; if the latter, then all Hawkins can do is shrug and wish him the best of luck.

Rivals $
9/17
Form BWI...names a top 5 of Maryland, Georgia, West Virginia, Oregon and Tennessee and says UCF has offered and is coming on strong. Making an official to UGA next weekend for the Alabama game. Visiting Oregon on 10/11 and may be visiting Michigan as well. Says Coach Johnson at PSU has not been returning his calls and explains the Jason Ankrah situation as he knows it.
