PSU missing in battle for local talent
10/12/2007

Make your name known early. Make a good impression. Make someone feel important.

It's called good recruiting.

Seems like you can't walk the sideline at Scranton Memorial Stadium these days without almost accidentally bumping into a big-time college football coach doing some good recruiting of their own.

A few weeks ago, Rutgers coach Greg Schiano choppered in. Last week, it was Pittsburgh coach Dave Wannstedt. Neither was allowed by NCAA rules to talk about why they were there, but it's no coincidence that both showed up for West Scranton games, and that Hubie Graham plays for West Scranton.

Graham is leading the charge, a four-star tight end prospect as rated by Rivals.com who has received more than 20 scholarship offers. But the Lackawanna Football Conference, right now, might have more Division I talent on the field than it ever has.

Graham is a stud, but Pittsburgh also has shown interest in West quarterback Matt McGloin, who threw for 340 yards last week. West offensive lineman Eric Shrive, a 6-foot-7, 280-pound tackle, has received offers from three schools - Pittsburgh, Rutgers and Syracuse. And here's guessing two or three more local players will be getting some serious Division I interest before signing day in February.

The point is, Wannstedt and Pittsburgh were hot on Graham's trail long before his senior season began, and they are blatantly putting the same full-court press on Shrive. Just as clearly, Schiano is trying to make the same type of inroads in Northeastern Pennsylvania.

My question: Where is Penn State?

Where's Penn State? Waiting for Mark Weddeburn to commit...PSU doesn't need Graham...the other two guys are apparently MAC level talents. Writer needs to assess the actual situation before shilling for NEPA talent.

Eric Shrive is only a Junior, and Penn State HAS shown interest. Reporters like to cry about things like this but don't realize that not every hot shot PA AAA player is going to be able to translate his game onto the college football field. There are many exciting players I have watched throughout the years, that own the PA H.S. fields they step on but simply don't have the game to further it on a Big 10 level. You wouldn't see the Michigan's, Ohio State's, Penn State's, etc. offering many of these players as a plan A. Terrell Pryor is the perfect example, he plays AA ball. You can look across PA, in Quad AA and find players who dominate and put up big numbers against other Quad AA players; but there physical attributes don't carry over like Terrell's physical attributes do.

I try to keep my eye on PA H.S. football, and there are a lot of talented players - but a Pitt offer doesn't translate into a Penn State offer. Besides, Dick Anderson is the one who keeps an eye on this area...for the most part. We have offered scholarships to many PA players, Pete Massarro this year, Josh Marks, Derek Moye, etc. Mark Wedderburn is an excellent TE prospect, he is a legacy...and he has Penn State on top if his list the whole way [73% to 75% now, supposedly]. You have to individually look at the needs of the program, and not some writer who thinks he knows what he is talking about. We have Mickey Shuler, Brennan Coakley, Francis Claude, Jon Ditto, Andrew Szczerba, Andrew Quarless all at tight end. It would make no sense to offer Graham when Wedderburn already has ties to the football program.

LOL!!! Well, if Wanny, Syracuse and Rutgers are recruiting them, then obviously Penn State is missing out. Perhaps PSU just figures they have no hope against such recruiting powerhouses, so they are concentrating on kids that lesser schools like USC and Florida are after.

Sheesh! This area is mostly domer and PSU fans, so it is funny that writer isn't asking where Jabba the Weis is; perhaps with all the talent they have they just don't need these kids.

It's located in State College, PA ...

in all seriousness, PSU is only taking one tight end in this class and it identifiedd the one it wants in Mark Wedderburn. He is a PSU legacy, he is more athletic than Graham and has higher upside. Add in the fact he is a current teammate and is very good friends with supposedly one of the top QBs in the country next year, Savage, it only helps.

PSU isn't missing out at all in passing on Hubie Graham. That is a fact.
