USC Offers Pennsylvania Standout
By Phil Kornblut

USC has joined the offer list for DL Eric Shrive (6-7 296) of Scranton, PA. Shrive is a hotly recruited prospect with numerous offers including Syracuse, Pittsburgh, Rutgers, Illinois, NC State, Miami, Notre Dame, Penn State, Tennessee and Boston College. As it turns out, USC recruiter Ray Rychleski and Shrive's father were best friends in high school. "I'm interested in South Carolina and I'll visit there," Shrive said. "I know coach Rychleski well. He visited here last week. All the schools that have offered have been in, and Southern Cal has been in. I won't narrow my list until August." Shrive said he has some research to do on USC, and he said his father's friendship with Rychleski won't be a factor in his decision. "If it's the right fit, it's the right fit." Shrive said he does not have a favorite.

Farrell at Rivals and Lichtenfels at Scout have both confirmed it. There's also an article in Shrive's hometown paper saying it's true:

The Times-Tribune - Breaking News: Shrive commits to Penn State 11:55 a.m.

A little credit here, huh? Wasn't I the one who said PSU should be all over this kid...

Scratch another one of Jeff Johnson's list...

I've been following PSU recruiting for a few years and this is probably the biggest shocker of the "internet age." There was no indication that this kid was seriously considering PSU...none whatsoever. The fact that he verballed to PSU in May of his JR year speaks volumes to how hard the staff is working behind the scenes. Just amazing work. Have to give credit where credit is due.

5* OT ERIC SHRIVE

The Times-Tribune - West Scranton’s Shrive commits to Penn State

“I’m really excited,” Shrive said. “I really feel that Penn State is the place for me.”

Offensive line receives boost | Altoona Mirror

“I wasn’t caught off guard with his commitment to Penn State. I didn’t realize it was going to happen [Thursday],’’ said DeAntona, who had to call a substitute teacher in while he tried to learn more while being “bombarded’’ by phone calls from media and coaches. “Eric got to see a lot of places in the last few months. Penn State was always high on his list. People got caught up in the Internet gossip on Notre Dame.’’

And if you had asked me 2 days ago, that award might have gone to Givens. Also, Jerome Hayes was another who seemed to commit out of nowhere.

I like these shockers (no, the THE shocker). Keep 'em coming!

The day after and I'm still in shock. This was the most out of the blue decision I've seen.

As for Hayes, I believe he was heading to Miami before he was told they were out of ships the day before signing day. We lucked out on that one.

ESPN - Breaking down the 2009 offensive tackles - Football Recruiting

Quote:
Two Big Ten-bound tackles also broke into the top 10. David Barrent (Clive, Iowa/Valley), who is headed to Michigan State, and Eric Shrive (West Scranton, Pa.), who is committed to Penn State, will fit in well with the physical nature of the conference. Barrent has a jarring first punch that stalemates opponents. His jolting initial blow along with his leg drive make him an impressive run-blocker.

Shrive takes pride in being a real workhorse on the line of scrimmage. He stays after the defender even though he plays a l
