Quote:
Junior ESPNU 150 Watch List linebacker prospect Travis Hughes (Virginia Beach, Fla./Kempsville) is holding a written offer from Maryland and verbal offers from Virginia Tech, N.C. State, West Virginia, Penn State and East Carolina, ESPN affiliate Web site InsideMDSports.com reports.
His father, Tony Hughes, said, "After the football season is when I think he'll make a commitment. He'll commit before he's a senior. Maryland has a big [headstart] right now because Maryland is like a family to him."

With four unofficial verbal offers in hand and several more colleges from coast-to-coast entering the fray for his services, the rising 2011 prospect from Kempsville will be a hot commodity from the Commonwealth next season. With impressive showings at camps and combines throughout the Spring and Summer, including gathering the linebackers MVP award at the Ultimate 100 camp in New Jersey, Hughes is a giant blip on the recruiting radar screen right now and will continue to grow over the next two years. With elder brother Trenton a defensive back at Maryland, Travis will have the luxury of having experienced voices in his ears throughout the process.

By Brian Mohr. Travis has offers from Maryland, VT, ECU, and PSU. Tony Hughes, Travis Hughes father, says that his son definitely likes VT....Maryland is on him and Travis also likes UGA, LSU, and Clemson. Tony goes on to talk about a variety of topics....

Scout.com: Hughes Scores New Offer
Hughes has some nice things to say about PSU and Kermit Buggs, who knows his family personally.

By Brian Mohr. Travis talks about his unofficial to VT for the NC State game....he was very impressed, thought it was everything he had thought it would be, and was excited about his interaction with the VT coaches, particularly defensive coordinator Bud Foster. Travis will be visiting Maryland next weekend for the BC game and talks about some friends-teammates that will be joining him......also talks about the end to his own junior season and some of his accomplishments.

That previous article I summarized was a bit interesting....Travis views himself as an aggressive player and likes how VT blitz's their LBs and allows them to make plays....just thought it was interesting because I believe Navorro leads the nation (LBs) in TFLs and it seems to be almost a certainty that he'll be an AA.
Really a shame that both Sean Lee and Navorro had injuries this season, I really believe if those two got in a groove (w/ Odrick in front) that both could have been AA LBs.

Scout.com: Hughes Holds Nine
2/12/10
By Matt Alkire. UVa, WVU, VT, Clemson, Maryland, UNC, NC State, East Carolina, and UConn have all offered....PSU has offered verbally but has not sent a written offer yet. Talks about some upcoming visits these next few weeks and plans to camp at UNC, Maryland, PSU, and UConn....UConn likes him as a RB and that intrigues him....loves everything about PSU and has to get up for a visit.

Hughes is a good prospect, but I don't know if he'll get that offer before he makes a visit to State College.

There's an article on nittanynetwork.com that requires a subscription (which I don't have), but the title is "Hughes: Penn State has fallen off a bit." I'm assuming that they are either not recruiting him as heavily, or he's not as interested in them...or both?
Has he actually scheduled a visit in the coming weeks?

The scout article two posts above is the most recent. The newest rivals article from the VT site essentially mentions what had been said about PSU in the past (can't remember the prior article that stated this); one of two dream schools with Clemson being the other. Visiting Maryland this week and VT the following week though, and his brother is a player at Maryland.

I wouldn't be surprised if Hughes never gets a written offer.
If we had 20+ 'ships, it might be a different story.

42, you wouldn't be surprised becasue with our low number of schollies, you:
A. don't think we will be taking a MLB this year?
B. you don't see us taking a LB at all?
C. just think there are better MLB prospects / just think the staff likes other MLB's more?

Football notes: What's going with Travis Hughes, Demetrious Nicholson and Brad Hudson | HamptonRoads.com | PilotOnline.com
Quote:
Football season is still months away but for many South Hampton Road athletes it never ends as some are going to combines, camps and making recruiting trips.
Here’s a look at what some of South Hampton Roads top players are doing.
|
Quote:
Travis Hughes
Travis Hughes, a rising Kempsville senior, has been getting a lot of attention. The 6-foot-1, 220-pound linebacker/running back has 15 offers, including one from LSU last night.
The second-team All-Tidewater running back also has offers from Virginia Tech, Maryland, North Carolina, N.C. State, West Virginia, Virginia, Louisville, South Carolina, Clemson, East Carolina, Texas Tech, Oregon, Penn State and Connecticut.
“I’ve been getting all sorts of offers,” Hughes said Thursday night. “This has definitely been a shock. I wanted to commit before the season but now that I’m getting a lot of major offers, I want to go on all of official visits.”
Hughes’ father, Tony, has been through this recruiting process before with his older son, Trenton, who now plays at Maryland. But even he has been taken back by the attention Travis has received.
“This is really different because the offers have been coming in from all over and early. What I did learn from the last time is that you have to be wide about your decision. You have to know the depth chart of each team, the tenure of the coach, how they are academically as far as their graduation rate and are tutors on top of the players. Those are the main things we’re looking at.”
His father said the favorites – right now – are Maryland, Virginia Tech, Clemson, South Carolina and North Carolina. He also said Virginia “has really come on strong.”
“We’ve been to Maryland and Virginia Tech. We’re going to Virginia this weekend. The following week we’re going to North Carolina, N.C. State and Clemson.”
It’s going to be an interesting next few months for Travis Hughes.
