“LSU and Tennessee have been recruiting me the hardest and I like them both a lot,” Evan Hailes said. “I probably have the best relationship so far with those coaches, but I haven’t been on the campus yet.” In fact, Hailes says that he grew up following LSU. “I’ve really always liked them. I love the stadium. You always hear people talking about the noise there – it seems amazing..."

Kurelic’s Comment: Landing Hailes would be huge for Joe Paterno and staff. The Nittany Lions have as good a shot as anyone and it should do nothing but help having the last visit.

42, you knew this would be coming. Great grab for PSU...congrats to Evan. Sounds like he is going to be putting in some work by trying to get another certain DT on board. Looking pretty good...

College Football Recruiting On the Trail 2010 - ESPN
Quote:
Under Armour All-American DT Evan Hailes to Penn State
ESPNU 150 Watch List defensive tackle Evan Hailes of Oscar Smith (Chesapeake, Va.) has committed to the Nittany Lions for the Class of 2010.
He also considered Virginia Tech, Tennessee, North Carolina State and LSU. Among many others were Michigan, Virginia, West Virginia, Boston College, California, Clemson and Minnesota.
ESPN's Craig Haubert commented on the pick-up, "Penn State added a big piece, literally to their 2010 class with a commitment from Evan Hailes. The Nittany Lions toppled in-state Virginia Tech for Hailes commitment and this was a big win as he fills a need in addition to being a fine prospect."
"Part of Penn States success last year was the play of their defensive line, but time is coming to start re-loading and the Nittany Lions have not gotten a defensive tackle prospect the caliber of Hailes since the 2006 class. This Under Armour All-American is a thickly built kid who can eat up space and clog running lanes between the tackles. While his size makes him appealing Hailes also shows flashes of being able to move like a kid his size shouldn't. He flashes good quickness and can be disruptive in the backfield. He also has the size and power to collapse the pocket as a pass rusher."
"Hailes is a good and we feel key pick-up. He is a kid who could likely contribute early and develop into a key element of that defense."
As a junior, the 6-foot-1, 315-pound prospect registered 81 tackles (21 for loss) and 11 sacks.

I bet JoePa and LJ Sr would get a good laugh out of that -- apparently ESPN didn't think much of Devon Still or any of the other DT recruits in the past 3 classes.
