Maybe they just think the world of Hailes.

Evan Alrighty: Hailes commits to Penn State -
6/28
Quote:
By Bill Kurelic, NN Recruiting Analyst

June 28, 2009
It comes as no surprise. Chesapeake (Va.) Oscar Smith defensive lineman Evan Hailes has committed to Penn State.
“Yes, I committed,” Hailes said. “To start with, I had a lot of options. But Penn State always talked about me getting my degree, not just being a football player. They treated me like family. Everything was right.”

Kurelic’s Comment: Hailes commitment gives Joe Paterno nine pledges for his 2010 class. It’s also gives Paterno a potential force in the middle of his defensive line.

Actually, they had Still listed as an OT. They graded him only as a 79.
FWIW, they also rated Jack Crawford as a 68 and had him pegged as a TE.
Apparently, these guys are pretty good at evaluating talent...

ESPN as a network has a minimal attention span, everything is about what is happening at this moment. Still had some brutal luck as a TR FR and RS FR but I still have very high hopes...think he'll be big time stil. I went and checked his ESPN eval, they had him as the #11 OT for the '07 class, scout had him as the #12 DT, and Rivals had him as the #10 SDE. He was also the #1 recruit in DE...and I think he split Gatorade POY honors (could be wrong about that) or something with Andrew Szczerba (RS SO PSU TE - 6'6 260-265).

By Sean Fitz. Evan talks about the big scrimmage coming up prior to the season against Phoebus and says the team is looking forward to a repeat state title...talks about PSU coach Larry Johnson, his frequent contact with coach, and applying what he learned over the summer...feeling a step ahead of everybody else. Phone calls from recruiters have pretty much stopped but he gets lots of letters and guesses some can't get the message that he is all PSU, still plans a January enrollment...will visit PSU for the Iowa and Ohio State games.

That makes Hailes, Jones and Fortt (assuming he picks PSU) entering in Jan -- I hope no other kids are planning early entries because that would put them at 26 for the class of '09 as I figure it -- there were 26 in the last class after Givens didn't make it, dropping to 22 with 4 early entries, plus 3 early entries in this class makes 25.

This may not be a problem. I have heard that they can count towards the 25 in either class, and that the 85 limit is more important here.
I think Redd and Haplea have also indicated they are planning to enroll early.

hmmm . . . I hadn't heard that before, but if those other recruits also enter early then I guess that'll prove that rule. I'm sure the coaches have a better grasp of the rules than I do . . . and if not, JoePa can just tell the NCAA: "Hey! I'm in the hall of fame so you're interpreting the rule wrong!"

Phillip Sims, Trey Burton highlight Oscar Smith-Venice game on ESPNU - ESPN
Players to watch:
Quote:
Oscar Frommel Smith
Evan Hailes, Defensive tackle, 6-1, 315
College: Penn State
The top-rated defense lineman in Virginia is a massive body with deceptive quickness off the ball. The Penn State commit can certainly eat up space and force a double-team, but he will surprise you with his lateral agility and fast get-off. Hailes, a four-star prospect and the No. 7 DT in the nation, can be disruptive in the trenches and cause headaches; he tallied 81 tackles last fall.

Hailes: Man of the hour - (FREE, video of UA AA ceremony)
Quote:
Under Armour All-American Evan Hailes, the No. 7 defensive tackle in the country, is a big reason why ESPN Scouts Inc. has Penn State's current 2010 class ranked No. 7 nationally.
As part of the Under Armour Tour, Hailes was recently honored at his high school, Oscar Smith in Chesapeake, Va., for garnering All-American status. He was presented with his Under Armour All-American Game jersey at ceremony.
Below is a video interview with Hailes from the event:
