Minutes before the kickoff of Buckingham, Browne & Nichols School's game last Friday night against Thayer Academy, Boston College faxed over an official scholarship offer to Blake Barker, a junior tight end and defensive end from Wellesley. BB&N head coach John Papas kept the news a secret from the 6-foot-6, 235-pound Barker until after the game. He was elated to get the first of what should be many offers. "He's one of the more popular kids on the team, so the kids were excited for him," Papas said.

Barker picks up eighth offer
3/10
By Mike Farrell. Rutgers has offered, which was unexpected for Blake despite receiving a lot of mail from RU...doesn't have any favorites...will probably make an unofficial visit to UF while in Florida on family vacation, Blake also may attend the PSU spring game, and may make a visit to Boston College again soon.

Blake Barker from Wellesley (Mass.) Browne & Nicols has been a two-year starter on both sides of the ball. The 6-foot-6 and 235-pound Barker could play either tight end or defensive end in college.
Barker caught 22 passes for 450 yards during his junior season. He had five touchdowns. Barker had 12 sacks on defense.
“Some schools say tight end or defensive end,” Barker said. “Some just say tight end.”
Penn State is one of the schools that has told Barker he could play either position in college.

Florida is taking the Ole Miss approach ... offer everyone and his mother. Sad thing is, these scumbags are only verbal offering 95% of the kids to keep their interest peaked until they shut the door.

By Matt Alkire. Blake talks about his additional offers, Florida and Tennessee, says that Rutgers offered but there has been no contact, and also hopes that the mail he is about to receive from UVA is another offer.

Scout.com: RU Offers another Big TE
3/28
By Todderick Hunt. Blake explains how unexpected the Rutgers offer was because of no previous contact with the coaches...discusses the kinds of things he is looking for in a university, his own game on the football field, and claims to be completely open with no favorites. Also stands out as a lacrosse player and plays hockey to stay in shape.

Scout.com: Barker Picks Up Two More
4/10
By Matt Alkire. Virginia and Purdue have offered. Blake says both schools are good schools, that he talks frequently with the UVA coaches and has always thought about attending UVA.

I read somewhere recently that a recruiting database had about 18 WRs claiming Florida offers. You think all of those were written?

Just for kicks I counted up the offers list on Florida's Scout board. There were 84 total prospects claiming offers, 22 of which were listed under the wide receiver category. Of course, anyone can claim a Gator offer so it does not exactly prove that UF has a string-them-along recruiting strategy. But 84 sure is a high number of offers, real or perceived.
