Hey 42: you mention Szczerba at TE, but what about Mark Wedderburn? IIRC, he was a decent TE recruit from years past...has he been moved around?

Welcome coach. Mark hasn't been moved as far as I know...posters like to speculate about how he could help us at DE, either now or in the future, but I hate that talk.
Wedderburn can be a legit offensive threat, I really do believe he can be special as a TE (hands are quite exceptional, speed, athleticism) and a move to DE wouldn't fully utilize his athletic gift.
I can't keep things straight as far as whether this is what happened with Mark, but I think he may have gotten sick which hurt him as far as weight gain - not sure if I am remembering correctly.

I think the recent news was Wedderburn was down to 225. Too light to play tight end very effectively. One of the articles had Haplea at 240 as a jr. in high school.

I think the others have already answered your question.
I am hopeful that Wedderburn can get things turned around (it is early), but with Gilliam and now Haplea right behind him, he'll need to get it turned around soon.
I also believe a position switch could still happen if things don't work out at TE.

I don't know how accurate it is, but I read a PSU schollie site that lists Gilliam as a DE. With Massaro out for the year maybe they're shifting some people around for insurance? That's pure speculation on my part. They are pretty thin at DE. Lord I hope Hayes stays healthy and has a great year.

Wedderburn was a terror at DE in the Big 33 game, so I wouldn't mind seeing him there. Maybe we'll see him on special teams this year so he can at least get some playing time.

Last word on Gilliam was that the coaches were still fighting over which side of the ball he would start.
There is also an unconfirmed rumor that Gbadyu could play some stand-up DE, FWIW.

Wouldn't Gbadyu be too small to play that role? Just wondering.

Reports are that he is around 235 pounds and could be at 240 by the season, if need be.

During the The Spring Game broadcast Joe said Wedderburn was not really suited for a regular TE position but a "flex" type position.

By Sean Fitz. Kevin sprained his ankle in a scrimmage this past week but luckily his season won't begin for another week...will be up at PSU this weekend for the Akron game. Had previously been back to PSU since his commitment to watch practice over the summer, and in addition to the Akron game, says he will also attend the Iowa and Ohio State games....keeps in touch with PSU OLine coach Dick Anderson once or twice a week.
