Bolden: PSU among leaders - [video interview/Illinois NFTC footage]
6/9

The NIKE Football Training Camp at the University of Illinois on Saturday was loaded with quarterback talent. Four ESPNU 150 Watch List signal callers took part in the camp - including Robert Bolden from Orchard Lake (Mich.) St. Mary’s.
Bolden showed his stuff in War Memorial Stadium on Saturday and was as good as any quarterback on hand.
The 6-foot-4 and 195-pound Bolden, the most consistent quarterback in the day’s activities, has the potential to be a star at the next level. The ball comes out of Bolden’s hand like a rocket. He also has excellent speed and agility.
Bolden has close to two dozen scholarship offers including Penn State, Michigan, Michigan State, Oregon, Wisconsin and Nebraska.

Bolden's father has denied the rumor per Bill Kurelic (ESPN).
Oops.

Bolden sets record straight -
6/16

Rumors were flying Monday that ESPNU 150 Watch List quarterback Robert Bolden from Orchard Lake (Mich.) St. Mary’s had committed to Michigan State. Nittany Network quickly got in touch with Bolden’s father, who said his son had not committed to the Spartans - or anyone else for that matter.
Robert Bolden echoed that sentiment Monday night.
“I haven’t committed to anyone,” Bolden said. “I heard about those rumors, but I don’t know where they came from. They aren’t true.”
Bolden has 23 scholarship offers including Penn State, Michigan State, Oregon, Michigan, Wisconsin, West Virginia, Nebraska and Northwestern. However, it is three schools that stand out.

We have been down this road many times 42 ... rumors persist XXX kid verballed to YYY school ... it leaks, and when when asked - father and recruit deny verballing. This is a case where kid wants to announce it in the form of a press conference or on his own terms. I have no doubt the kid verballed to Michigan State and we should be hearing it officially in the coming weeks.

True...and the commitment is not unexpected.
However, to be reporting it before the kid can is bush league. Nothing good can come from it, and quite possibly, give the kid pause to reconsider his decision.
That being said, MSU is putting together a nice class this year - although I believe Gholston to be HIGHLY overrated - and I hope they can soon overtake Michigan as the premier program in the state.

Dream on. The odds of that happening are as good as Pitt overtaking PSU as the premier program in PA. MSU's had their good recruiting runs before (Charles Rogers, T.J Duckett), but the fact still remains that it's a second or third tier program that has a moderately low ceiling. They've "dominated" the in-state recruiting with Dantonio by mainly taking kids that Michigan hasn't offered. Some big loss.

A lot of those kids are better than who Michigan is taking though. I'm not saying that Michigan isn't getting better fits for their system, but for the average school I'd take MSU's classes.
And this kills my dream of someone poaching (get in there, Tressell) Boisture.

Except Pitt and PSU no longer play and can determine on the field who is better. That will happen every year with MSU-UM.
The "fact" that MSU is a second tier program may be changing. If RRod doesn't soon return Michigan to its 9-10 win/year usual, it may take same time for the program to recooperate.
Alabama, Notre Dame, USC, Penn State all had periods of mediocrity. Maybe this is UM's time.
IMO, I'd rather have some of those MSU recruits, too. Let's hope that the 14 commits you have right now stick. No repeat of last year...

Really? Like who? The '10 class is lopsided in sheer amount of commitments, so tell me who you'd take from '09 and '08 from Michigan State compared to their UM counterparts. From the '10 class, I'd obviously take Gholston, but with his coach pushing him to MSU, it was one hell of an uphill battle.

Out of curiosity, why is that? Seems a bit dumb to have a rival and never play them.

I remember hearing this during the Nick Saban era. Pardon my skepticism.

15. And I'm hoping that a few don't stick. The amount of commits this early is nice, but the quality isn't where it should be. I'm not a fan of throwing out upwards of 150+ offers and seeing what sticks. I don't like throwing out very few offers, but 150+ is excessive, especially when you have to turn kids away.

There will undoubtedly be decommitments (and maybe some of them will benefit the class like last year), but I doubt there will be 9.

Dude, looking at your class as it stands now, I'd be very disenchanted with what's coming in. RicchRod is recruiting like he is at WVU not Michigan.

What about the '08 and '09 classes? Also, aside from Noel Devine and Jason Gwaltney, Rodriguez never landed players like Devin Gardner, Ricardo Miller and Marvin Robinson at WVU. Who don't you like in UM's class?

Can someone explain to me what this means? Everyone and their mother seems to adore this saying. I don't quite get it. This class already blows any WVU class he ever had out of the water. His first full class was ranked 8th by Rivals. Gee, I sure hope he learns how to recruit. A kid like Ken Wilkins holds more value in Michigan's scheme than in PSU's scheme. While he might be ranked lower on PSU's straight up 4-3 scheme, his value is greater as a 4-3/3-4 OLB hybrid. Just a quick example.

Your LB recruiting has been a disaster, and the lineman board this year is a mess. The top of the classes look fine, but they're taking too many fliers on fringey guys. That shouldn't be necessary even for a weird scheme and coming off a bad year.
I'm not coming at this from a PSU perspective. Rich Rod is a great coach, and I think he'll be successful. What I'm saying is that he could be more successful if he started using the Michigan brand to pull in the right blue chippers for his scheme.
