Dunbar Junior Holds U-Md., WVU, Pitt Offers - Josh Barr's Recruiting Insider
Quote:
Dunbar Coach Craig Jefferies, who turns out plenty of top players, reports the first member of his junior class is beginning to get some serious attention. Javarie Johnson, who projects as either an outside linebacker or a speed-rush defensive end, has picked up offers from Maryland, West Virginia and Pittsburgh, with Penn State's offer on its way, according to Jefferies.

Conspicuously absent from the offer list is one from Illinois, considering that's the same HS for Benn and Vontae. Now that Locksley is gone, it looks like the the DC kids aren't among those getting the Zooker's first 200 offers this year.

With Locklsley gone to UNM, Maryland should be easier for PSU, not that Illinois got anyone of note from that state this year. Illinois won't be a factor in Maryland.

Quote:
LB Javarie Johnson, 6-4, 208, Washington (D.C.) Dunbar
ASSETS: Johnson has great size for a linebacker and long arms. He's very athletic and is a quick-twitch athlete who explodes in whatever direction he chooses. He's comfortable in coverage and uses his wingspan to his advantage either by shuffling backs and receivers where he wants them or using his long arms to make a play on the ball.
AREAS FOR IMPROVEMENT: Johnson tends to stop and set his hips too often in pass coverage which doesn't allow for a fluid change of direction. He needs to be a bit looser and keep his hips open to react to speedy running backs.
WHAT WAS MOST IMPRESSIVE AT CAMP: The way he gets his hands on backs and directs them where he wants them to go and his long frame and wingspan. He's still raw in coverage but can make up for it with his ability to close on the ball with his long arms.
CONCLUSION: Johnson is a great looking prospect physically who looks to be a potentially dominant strongside linebacker at the next level who can cover tight ends and slot receivers as well as run plays down.

That was an abrupt commitment.
Not saying it's going to happen, but it seems like the kind of commitment that may not stick.
FWIW, PSU was never an option...and never offered.

No commitment. Javarie refuted it on GBW.

I'm aware, but I figured this forum would get the most chatter about it.

What is the deal with Lichtenfels premium article then...this is all wrong?
Scout.com: Johnson Makes it Michigan

By Bob Lichtenfels. Bob says Javarie called to inform of the commitment just prior to coming back home for the Scout combine. Javarie's HC Craig Jeffries confirmed the commitment earlier this morning.

He was never getting an offer from PSU to begin with. Nick Forbes is probably next on the board for an offer is someone goes elsewhere.

This is great. Always love the player who says his coach misunderstood him. The kid is waiting to do a press conference, hence the I didn't verbal to Michigan routine. We have seen this so many times.
