Second verse....same as the first....
"His athletic skills translated into football dominance on just about every snap. He solidified himself as the draft's top senior receiver moving towards the combine and now grades out as a late first-round pick."

I burst out laughing after I read that. My parents used to say that when I was a kid. TOO funny.

Julio Jones and AJ Green being ranked as largely the #1/2 concensus freshman receivers going into last year and both of them ACTUALLY performing up to their hype is an incredibly rare occurance. Bottom line is when Williams begins his career you hold your breath and hope that the extremely high single digit ranking with 5 stars attached to it is going to translate into amazement on the field for at least 3 years. He only ever really got my heartrate up his freshman year and returning kicks or running the ball his senior year. I still think that he has developed from an athlete / QB into a solid 2nd round receiver with NFL potential due to his athleticism, versatility, and (gotta love the expression) "upside" as a receiver and also being impressive as a returner... but D-Will never separated himself from Butler and Norwood as the guy you have to get the ball to. You just can't look at the sum of his career and say that he "lived up to the hype". He's was the best receiver out of the three on video games maybe... but I'd say the three of them are remarkably similar unless you're talking about returning kicks/punts and he probably had the worst concentration / hands out of the group. All that said... I still loved watching him play for PSU. Good ball carrying vision and top end speed.

Because return skills are becoming more and more wanted. As a WR, he sucks.

Speaking of underacheiving, how's your program doing?
|
You having a little bit of short-term memory loss there bud? Remember when you guys went two seasons with a combined 7 wins? Speaking of underachievers, Penn State sure has set the Big 10 on fire since joining. What's it been, two Big 10 titles? That's not underachieving. Getting a big head since you finally beat the underachieving program for the first time since dinosaurs roamed the Earth? I mean, it only took the program's worst team ever for PSU to finally win.

The GM who takes Derrick Williams in the first round will cement himself as the single dumbest GM in the league. I find it ridiculous that a good Senior Bowl can somehow make people forget that the guy never topped 600 receiving yards.

But here's my question, and you of all people (PSU fans) would be best equipped to answer this. How come Butler and Norwood were able to put up good numbers (including yards per catch, touchdowns, more yards) and Williams wasn't? You can't honestly say he's lived up to the hype of a #1 recruit.
|
Still waiting for an answer on this.

Anyway, trying to argue with people that actually think Derrick Williams was anything but mediocre/average is a waste of time. Might as well lock this thread.

Sticking to the years that DWill was with the program, PSU has won 2 big ten titles. How many has Michigan won during that time?
Also, during those four years, PSU has beaten OSU twice. How many times has Michigan won during that time?
I don't think you can deny that he is a great versatile player who can do pretty much anything you ask of him on field. Off the field, he brought a lot more talent to Happy Valley. More than we'll ever truly know. Maybe if you guys had someone like that up in Ann Arbor these last four years, you wouldn't have zero big ten titles and zero wins versus OSU during that time.

There was a lot said about his efforts made in our recruiting process... that's incredibly important and very hard to measure while it had a very positive, pervasive impact on the entire program that will continue for years to come... I hadn't thought about that.

You always have to adjust for context when evaluating players for the pros. The Big Ten is run heavy to begin with - I always mentally rank B10 RBs a little lower, and QBs/WRs a little higher.
Taking into account the JayPa factor too, I think Williams will be a good pro. If he goes higher than Britt though, I will probably break something.

Yup, 'twas all because of Williams. How did PSU do against Michigan?

Again, all Williams. How did PSU do against Michigan?

So you're giving all the credit for PSU's lone Big 10 titles to Williams? Um, okay then.

How high though? This is a guy who never finished higher than 19th in receiving yards in the Big 10. I don't even think he ever finished in the top 2 on his own team!

Good return man, maybe a fourth option as a WR. If he goes higher than Britt, the GM who made that decision should be fired.

Again, why are you still here? You even admitted this was a pointless exercise, yet you insist on its continuation.
What does that say about YOU?

Matt must have been banned from the michigan board for faulty information and obsessive flaming. thats why he has to hassle the board who keeps stealing recruits from them.
