Making a college commitment a tough task - Pittsburgh Tribune-Review
Quote:
Penn-Trafford lineman Luke Graham always had an idea that he wanted to go to Penn State. It was just a matter of getting the official offer. In fact, Graham committed a few days before his offer arrived in the mail.

"I committed so I could concentrate on my final year of high school and being part of the Penn-Trafford Warrior football for a final year," Graham said. "I wanted to know where I'd be going to college."

To wait or not to wait
Pros and cons for high school players committing before the season:

PROS
• If a player is injured, he still has his scholarship.
• He can focus on his senior high school season without distractions.
• His scholarship is secure regardless of who else commits and regardless of his performance during the high school season.

CONS
• The decision could be rushed and no official visits have been taken.
• Some athletes could miss out on more and bigger offers, if he were to have a big senior season.
• There could be a coaching change during or after the season.
• The team could have an uncharacteristically bad season.

Pros and cons for high school players committing after the season:

PROS
• There's no rush. A player can take five official visits before making a decision.
• An athlete can pick up more offers with an impressive senior season.
• He can get a better idea of what shape the program is in or where it's headed, and whether there may be a coaching change.
• He will have a better feel for the recruiting class and how many players at his position have committed.

CONS

• An athlete could be distracted by the recruiting process and the stress of a looming decision.
• If a player is injured before he makes a commitment, recruiters are likely to back off.
• A recruiter's interest could wane during a sub-par senior season.
• If a player waits too long to make a decision, the school may offer a scholarship to another player at his position.

By Sean Fitz. Luke talks about his senior season and the Penn-Trafford team....doesn't want to call it a rebuilding year and says they took some bad losses last year so most games are circled on the schedule. Had planned to visit prior to the end of summer but hasn't been able to with camp and everything...says he hasn't talked with PSU coaches recently but figures both he and the PSU coaches have been busy. Plans to make it to a lot of the PSU home games...Ohio State, Iowa are two mentioned.
