Miami (FL) is also showing a lot of interest, as are most of the Ivy League schools. Penn State RC/WR coach Mike McQueary is recruiting John and has visited with the Urschel family at their home. John is set to make an official visit to Penn State on 1/16 and talks about the Big Ten, his PSU offer/upcoming visit, whether he will commit or not, and getting to meet Joe Paterno.

This weekend, when Urschel makes his official visit to Penn State, it may be his final trip.

“Penn State is my favorite,” Urschel said. “I could commit this weekend. There is a pretty good chance I will. I loved it when I was out at Penn State. It was great. They have great football tradition combined with great academics.”

John and his mother arrived Thursday night, he committed to PSU assistant (RC/WR coach) Mike McQueary while on his official visit...Penn State OG Stefen Wisniewski served as John's host & John talks about the different stuff that was going on each day. The PSU coaches have encouraged him to apply to Schreyer Honors College, and he plans to do so.

Urschel actually committed before visit -

On Sunday night, Urschel discussed his decision with Nittany Network and revealed he had actually made his commitment to Penn State before arriving in State College.

“I committed before I went up for the weekend,” Urschel said. “I committed last week. But I hadn’t really talked to anyone about it. I was sold on Penn State before I got there.”

Urschel made official visits to Buffalo and Cornell as well as unofficial visits to Penn State, Pitt, Stanford and UCLA. In addition to Penn State, Urschel also had scholarship offers from Boston College and Buffalo.

My take:

I like Urschel as your traditional "sleeper" prospect. He seems to have the necessary athletic attributes, and is intelligent.

What I don't get is why we went after a 3rd OG in this class when we needed more help at DT or DE. The only thing I can guess is Ako Poti will not be back and the staff was concerned about depth at OG.

Throughout his outstanding high school career, Canisius lineman John Urschel hoped he would be good enough to play in the Ivy League.

Crusaders coach Brandon Harris kept telling Urschel a different story, that he was major-college material. “He’s been telling me that since junior year, he’s been telling me that’s the caliber of school I could go to,” said Urschel. “I was like, ‘Yeah, right.’ He’s my coach — you expect your coach to say that, but you don’t expect it to happen.” This week, thanks in large part to Harris, it happened.

At one time, Buffalo (N.Y.) offensive lineman John Urschel was pegged for the Ivy League, having received acceptance packages from Princeton and Cornell. But then Penn State recruiting coordinator Mike McQueary stopped by his high school with a scholarship offer to Penn State.

The offer was too good to turn down.

The 6-foot-3, 275-pound prospect made his decision days before visiting Penn State on the weekend of Jan. 16. He made his intentions clear on Jan. 17.

“I think it was the perfect mix between academics and athletics,” he said. “The fan support added in, and just how much the students at Penn State support the program — I think those three things just sold me 100 percent.”

Urschel just doesn’t excel on the field, he is also a standout in the classroom, as he boasts a 94 GPA and scored a 2190 on the SAT. Before Penn State, and other schools like Boston College came into the picture, Urschel was pretty sure that the focus of his college years would be on engineering, with a minor in football.

“Before, I was probably thinking Ivy League. I was planning to play in the Ivy League before my senior year, and then, I mean, things were pretty quiet for me still, and I didn’t really think about sending film anywhere else,” he said following from his decision. “I didn’t really know what constituted a really good player and what does it for them. I wasn’t sure how good I was, and I was playing against Buffalo talent. I didn’t know how I could compare myself to all of these players playing across the nation. My coach took the initiative of sending my tape to all these places, and I got a lot of good feedback. So I really owe a lot of it to my coach.”

On the field, he was named first team all-state and first team all-Western New York, as well as winning the Trench Trophy, which is given to the top lineman in western New York. He was also named the defensive MVP of his conference. Urschel recorded 77 tackles and four sacks on the year.
