Interview with Central’s Dakota Royer

Dakota Royer was a one-man wrecking crew last Friday night in Manheim Central's 56-33 win at Cocalico in the L-L League Section 2 opener for both teams.

Not that blue-chip junior struggled over the first three weeks of the season, but against the Eagles, he went bananas, and showed why college scouts are already drooling over him.

On defense, Royer piled up 11 total tackles and had a sack, and on offense, he hauled in eight catches for 157 yards and scored two touchdowns for the Barons, who wiped out the bad taste in their mouths after back-to-back to losses.

I caught up with Royer late Friday after the win over Cocalico, and we chatted about the keys to the victory, how his game is developing this season, and where Central goes from here.

Manheim Central High School athlete Dakota Royer is one of the best pass rushers in the state of Pennsylvania for 2010 and the 6-foot-3.5, 215-pound athlete picked up his first offer from Maryland recently. His favorite program is Penn State, however he is also considering Michigan, Pittsburgh and Notre Dame.

BIG TIME heavy PSU lean. If he gets his written offer, he could be the first, second, third or fourth to verbal. We have some major dominos that can happen EARLY once these written offers get sent out.

Royer had 107 tackles with an impressive 31 for a loss as a sophomore. He also had 12 sacks and two fumble recoveries. He was a two-time standout at the Schuman Underclassmen Combines, winning the most one-on-ones at the Ultimate100 this past summer.

Scout.com traveled to Manheim, Pa., to see junior linebacker Dakota Royer on Friday night and he did not disappoint, catching 5 catches for 112 yards, scoring two touchdowns and making 8.5 tackles on the night. Royer currently has offers from Penn State, Pittsburgh and Maryland and is hearing a lot from both LSU and Notre Dame.

Penn State is visiting tomorrow (1/9), LSU is sending him a lot of mail, Cincinnati and Colorado are also sending him mail. D-1 interest, offers piling up for Dakota Royer - Western PA Football By Joshua Funk

The Barons' defensive end/wide receiver has seven official Division-1 offers, according to Jeffrey Reinhart of the Lancaster New Era. Reinhart also confirmed that seven other D-1 programs are interested in Royer's services, but have not extended an offer yet. Royer has official offers from Penn State, Pitt, Temple, Rutgers, Maryland, Stanford, and Illinois. Other interested schools include Michigan State, LSU, Cincinnati, Colorado, Michigan, West Virginia, and UCONN. Reinhart, who has covered Manheim Central football very closely for the New Era in the past, also said in an e-mail that Royer appears to be leaning towards Penn State.

ROYER DRAWS RAVE REVIEWS – Manheim Central junior DE Dakota Royer is all over the recruiting radar. According to Rivals.com, the Barons’ QB-chaser has official offers from Penn State, Pitt, Illinois, Stanford, Temple, Maryland and Rutgers. And he’s also drawing interest from Colorado, Cincinnati, LSU, Michigan, Michigan State, UConn and West Virginia. Penn State’s Mike McQueary was at Central in the last few days to catch up with Royer’s progress. I know he’s a big Penn State fan, so if I were a betting guy, I’d have to say Penn State is right at the top of Royer’s list. But who knows? Royer caught 56 passes for 1,099 yards and had 11 QB sacks last fall for the Barons, who reached the District 3 Triple-A championship game. He’ll be one of the best blitzing DE’s in the state next season, and might also see some time at OLB.
