ESPN - Javanti Sparrow Rankings, Grade, News, Stats - College Football Recruiting 2009

Quote:
Sparrow is a fine-looking athlete on both sides of the ball, but we feel he projects best as a college safety. He possesses good size with his long, rangy frame and is a fast, fluid athlete with great ball skills. Tracks and defends the deep ball extremely well. Does a great job high-pointing the football and patrolling his deep zone with good instincts. Adjusts to the throw, changes gears when the ball is in the air and displays good concentration in traffic. Shows good leaping and ball skills. Difficult to complete the jump-ball on. Displays good range and above average burst getting off the hash over routes. Soundly reads the quarterback and does a good job anticipating and breaking on underneath routes. While he shows the speed and hips to match up on quicker slots in man-to-man coverages he occasionally gets beat and let receivers slip behind him; technique needs refinement. Pedal and read steps will need some polish as well. His ability to step down and play in the box versus the run is a question mark. Made some solid tackles as a run defender but was inconsistent. On offense, he is also a bit raw as a receiver but has a play maker feel to his game with the ball in his hands. Extends well away from his frame for the grab and adjusts nicely to the difficult throw. Slippery and elusive with the ball in the open field. Quick-footed athlete with loose hips. Pound for pound a strong kid and is feisty and determined after the catch to pickup YAC. Overall, Sparrow has a boat load of natural talent and should only improve as he concentrates on one position and receives college coaching. Great natural athlete.

If he has an offer, it is verbal.

Southeastern District player to watch: Javanti Sparrow of Western Branch | HamptonRoads.com | PilotOnline.com

8/16

Quote:
Javanti Sparrow has more than a dozen scholarship offers to play college football.

The reason is no secret.

Need speed?

Need Sparrow.

While Sparrow’s high speed in football and track have made opponents look like dial-up, this 6-foot-1, 190-pound Western Branch senior has proven to be a quick learner, too.

Thrust from running back to wide receiver before last season, Sparrow responded by running exact routes and nabbing a team-high 20 receptions in the Bruins’ run-oriented offense.

“I had to study a lot more because there’s a lot more things I had to know,” Sparrow said. “I had to get more into it, had to be more mentally prepared.’’

Sparrow is not South Hampton Roads’ most sought-after wide receiver — or even the most coveted wideout in his own district. That distinction belongs to Great Bridge’s Logan Heastie and Oscar Smith’s Tim Smith . Heastie, regarded as one of the nation’s top recruits at the position, has committed to West Virginia; Smith has more than 20 scholarship offers.

Still, college coaches like Sparrow at wide receiver and defensive back, and he lists his top six as Clemson, UNC, Penn State, Virginia, Virginia Tech and West Virginia.

Visited UNC over the weekend. Says he has a verbal offer from UNC. Visiting PSU on 11/6. Also interested in visiting Rutgers and Virginia. Virginia is the only school to give him a written offer. Likes UVA and UNC.

Sparrow commits after win | Charlottesville Daily Progress

Quote:
In the midst of an official visit this weekend, wide receiver Javanti Sparrow noticed the patches of empty seats in the student section.

That was explainable as East Carolina’s trip to Charlottesville landed perfectly on Virginia’s fall break.

It was the product on the field and the close-knit unit that produced a 35-20 victory, however, that ultimately led Sparrow to join Virginia recruiting class for 2009. The star from Chesapeake’s Western Branch High, who is 6-foot-1, 185 pounds and won the 500-meter run in the state indoor track in the winter of 2007 as a sophomore, became the 20th commitment for the class.

“It was real exciting. I didn’t think I was going to do it at first, but I was thinking about it hard when we got in the car on the way home,” Sparrow said Sunday. “We probably made it about 10 minutes down the road and just had to pull over and I called Coach [Al] Groh to tell him.”
