No. 3 Penn State returns home this weekend after routing Wisconsin 48-7 in Madison last Saturday night. Michigan travels to State College, and it will be another big recruiting weekend for Joe Paterno and his staff. The weekend will include visitors on both official and unofficial visits.

Defensive end Garry Gilliam (Hershey, Pa./Milton) will be one of those on an unofficial visit. The 6-foot-7, 250-pound Gilliam has close to a dozen scholarship offers. He says his top four choices are Penn State, Pitt, Connecticut and Virginia.

"I haven't set any official visits up," Gilliam said. "But I'll visit those four. I'd say they are all about equal right now."

The Penn State-Michigan game will be the first college game Gilliam has been to this season.

Quince Orchard (Gaithersburg, Md.) teammates defensive back Travis Hawkins and defensive end Jason Ankrah will visit Penn State this weekend. Hawkins will be making an official visit while Ankrah's visit will be unofficial. Both are high on Paterno's wish list.

Hawkins will choose between Penn State, Michigan, Oregon and Maryland. Ankrah will select from Penn State, Michigan, Virginia Tech, Maryland and Clemson.

Like many others, Ankrah was surprised by the firing of Clemson coach Tommy Bowden over the weekend.

"I was like 'wow'," Ankrah said. "That was really unexpected. But I'll still visit there. I'm setting up visits to Clemson and Virginia Tech, but I'm not sure when they will be."

Ankrah won't get a chance to make those visits...

Hawkins might make up his mind this weekend, too.

Gilliam goes elsewhere, IMO.

ESPN - Exodus of Pa.'s top prospects has PSU and Pitt looking elsewhere - Football Recruiting

Quote:
Penn State, 18 commits (Oct. 15)

Penn State entered the season with a strong recruiting class, and its early success has continued to add to it. Veteran assistant coach Larry Johnson has cleaned up in the state of Maryland with commitments from players like Under Armour All-American corner Darrell Givens (Indian Head, Md./Lackey). Pennsylvania native Eric Shrive is a top-10 offensive tackle and PSU's second ESPNU 150 prospect.

The Nittany Lions' have also struck big lately. Their win over Illinois in late September carried momentum off the field with the commitments of top-15 inside linebacker Glenn Carson (Manahawkin, N.J./Southern Regional) and speedy athlete Devon Smith (Waldorf, Md./Westlake). Penn State is making a strong push at this time for a top-15 class.

Joe Paterno and his Penn State coaching staff targeted Saturday, Oct. 18 as a big recruiting day. With Michigan in town an excellent group of prospects was expected, and they had to be happy with the turnout. Half of Paterno's commitments made it to the game as did some of the top Class of 2009 targets he would like to add to the class.

Quarterback Kevin Newsome (Chatam, Va./Hargrave Military Academy), defensive end Justin Brown (Wilmington, Del./Concord), defensive end Garry Gilliam (Hershey, Pa./Milton), defensive tackle Isaac Holmes (Hoboken, N.J.) and linebacker Gerald Hodges (Paulsboro, N.J.) were all in State College Saturday afternoon, and all have a scholarship offer on the table from Paterno.

Hodges committed to Rutgers in June but has not ruled out a switch to Penn State. The Nittany Lions appear to be in good shape with Gilliam and have a shot at the others as well, though Holmes may be as tough for Paterno to land as anyone from the group.

Rivals.com Football Recruiting - Penn State could turn some top prospects

Quote:
Mike Farrell
Recruiting Analyst

The second recruiting go-round for Chatham (Va.) Hargrave Military Academy quarterback Kevin Newsome – who originally committed to Michigan, then backed out – looks as if it's down to four schools.

Newsome, a 6-foot-3, 217-pounder, took an unofficial visit to Penn State this past weekend and said he will take an official visit to Happy Valley as well as officials to Boston College, Virginia Tech and possibly Tennessee. A recruit on a visit with Newsome this past weekend who wishes to remain anonymous said he is certain Newsome will end up at Penn State. In addition, a source close to Hargrave says Penn State clearly is the team to beat.

Newsome's official visit to Penn State tentatively is set for Dec. 5. He has an official set for Boston College on Nov. 8. Hargrave plays in Knoxville, Tenn., on Nov. 13, so Newsome could use that opportunity to see the Vols. A visit to Virginia Tech likely will come in late November.

If Newsome does end up at Penn State, it certainly will help the Nittany Lions when it comes to much-needed wide receivers. Newsome is friendly with former Michigan commitment Bryce McNeal, and landing Newsome would be a big deal to standout wide receiver Justin Brown from Delaware.

Speaking of Penn State, numerous prospects who didn't have interest in the Nittany Lions suddenly are interested after the team's awesome start. While Gaithersburg (Md.) Quince Orchard defensive end Jason Ankrah always has loved Penn State, teammate Travis Hawkins - a cornerback - once again is showing a lot of interest. Rutgers commitment Gerald Hodges, a linebacker, took a visit to Penn State last weekend. Some say Hodges is sticking with Rutgers, while others insist he's going to switch to Penn State. Fellow New Jersey prospect Joshua Evans, being recruited as an athlete, has more interest in Penn State now, although he remains a Florida lean.

Georgia tight end commitment Arthur Lynch (formerly Arthur Fontaine) from Dartmouth (Mass.) High still is being pursued by Penn State, Maryland and Virginia, but it's considered unlikely he'll switch his commitment. There also have been rumors about Michigan commitment Anthony LaLota having second thoughts and considering Penn State, but those don't appear to be true at this point.

I know it's Farrell, but pretty hard not to get your hopes up after that.

There's talk of Fulmer being done at Tennessee, which would seem to impact PSU as much as any school outside of the South.

I'm not just talking about Boyd (who was rumored to be a Vol yesterday). Stokes, etc...

Even if Fulmer gets canned I'd be surprised to see Stokes decommit. He sounded to me like a kid who loved the Vols instead of buying into the cult of Fulmer, so I think he'd stick as long as they didn't hire someone who chased him off.

Boyd isn't coming to PSU because he knows one QB that is. Can't see both Boyd and Newsome coming. If so, great.

Stokes ... I think he bolts Tennessee, if Fulmer gets canned, if a spot is open at PSU. Question is, does staff want him if it happens with guys like Brown and possibly McNeal on the board with high to great interest. If Newsome comes, I wouldn't be shocked if McNeal came as well.

ESPN: Chat with Scouts Inc.'s Billy Tucker - SportsNation

Quote:
Benjamin (Oshkosh, WI): Does PennState have a chance with any of the remaining big time Recruits?

Billy Tucker: PSU's class is already deep but think it will close strong down the stretch for its remaining spots, particularly if it is still in the national title picture.

Billy Tucker: I think they have more than just "a chance" with LB Jelani Jenkins and WR Bryce McNeal. Coach Larry Johnson has done a great job landing some of the better players out of Md. this year. Jenkins is wide open though.
