That's my guess as well. Although UM fans would probably claim it is because of their great tradition and lovely winged helmets, I think it is mainly because UM is about the only school in the country with even less depth at QB than PSU.
However, I think that over the past 30 years or so the great Michigan tradition has largely been built upon the notion of the proverbial Michigan man doing things the Michigan way, and they've pretty much chucked that out the window by hiring Rodriguez. Now the tradition is mutating to being hillbillies in winged helmets, so we'll see how that sells to Forcier.

JoePa: Contract situation doesn't affect recruiting - NCAA Football - Yahoo! Sports
Quote:
By GENARO C. ARMAS, AP Sports Writer
Apr 19, 7:19 pm EDT
STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) - Joe Paterno doesn’t think Penn State’s recruiting will be negatively affected by his uncertain contract status.
When the subject comes up with a high school prospect, the 81-year-old Paterno said Saturday, he “tells them exactly what I think. I hope I’m going to coach here, while you’re here, I may not … who knows what’s going to happen?
“I think we had a heck of a year recruiting,” Paterno said before the Blue-White spring scrimmage.
It was his first meeting with reporters since university president Graham Spanier said the school and Paterno agreed that a new contract beyond this year isn’t necessary for a man entering his 43rd season on the sideline with the Nittany Lions. They plan to meet at the end of the season, as usual, to discuss the future.
One notable blue chipper who got away this year was quarterback Terrelle Pryor, who signed with Big Ten rival Ohio State. But Paterno said he remains optimistic about the future.
“I’m excited about the team I got, I’m excited about our prospects for recruiting,” he said he told recruits.

It looks like UM is offically out of the Forcier race...they picked up QB commitment #2 today. With Newsome and Beaver on board I would say that means PSU must have the inside track for Forcier...agreed?

1. From all indications, PSU is not the leader for Newsome (silent to VT already) or Forcier (just going by the same Michigan rumors that everyone's read). That's why I think this absurd talk about Savage is just a pre-emptive rationalization given his lack of interest.
2. Mike Teel was a ** recruit who committed early in the summer with just an offer from Wisconsin. Some Bosco sources claimed that after the Henne drama and before Morelli switched, PSU told him they'd take his verbal if he'd switch on the spot. Yet, he's going to end up with a better career than Morelli, running a very similar scheme.
Very few quarterbacks end up as successful as a Mike Teel. How far he's come is a testament to the hard work put in by both Teel and a very skilled coaching staff.
|
1. Then you don't know anything about the recruitment of Savage relative to PSU. The staff told him HE DIDN'T FIT THE OFFENSE. So, I ask, if the staff told him he didn't fit the offense, why does the staff offer him? They didn't. Bob Lichtenfels has even verified he doesn't have one. Savage was at best the fourth option down for PSU. Personally, this is no loss to me. This is hardly a lack of interest from Savage.
2. I have said my piece on Mike Teel. Agree to disagree. Ending up with a better career than Morelli is no big feat.

I would be happy with that class...you took some time to put that together and it is a pretty good job. I doubt Curtis Drake would play at QB but I'm not sure how well he can throw I just know he is fast and quite athletic. Would probably need to pull in even 2 more OTs, maybe Travis Hawkins as a slot/RB/CB and Terrence Stephens at DT as well as pull off the miracle of getting Jelani Jenkins as a LB and I would be freaking thrilled. Add in Jordan Hill as a DT out of Steelton, possibly Jeremiah young out of Steelton as a RB and I wouldn't complain about anything. That would be approximately 25 kids including your list...Hawkins isn't likely, at least I don't think he is.
Then there is also the other 2-3 kids from Steelton, CB/WR Smith...ATH Andre Campbell as well as an OG/C type prospect. It looks like 25 possibly even more if we can fill it...lose a lot of seniors and we didn't bring in many kids in '08.

What about that kid CJ Crawford? Not being considered for QB at all?? Plus isn't he dying for an offer?

Crawford NEEDS an offer. He is versatile enough that if he can't play QB, he would be a nice WR.

Who knows with this kid. We have a poster on the west coast who knows Tate personally who claims we are still in it, but many other schools are possibilities.
What would you think of this class:
QB Curtis Drake - I would hope Craig Crawford ends up here if Forcier heads elsewhere
RB Shawne Alston - doubt he leaves the state...we have a better shot at Tavon Austin, Mike Marrow and Jeremiah Young (if he is offered).
WR Todd Thomas - hoping...
WR Jaleel Clark - hoping...
WR Justin Brown - hoping...
TE Arthur Fontaine - I'd take it
OT Mark Arcidiacono - solid
OT Brennan Williams - solid
C Ty Howle - solid
We'll probably take at least one OG in this class, if not two.
DE Jack Lippert - I'd take it, but I don't know how well he projects at this level
DT Nate Cadogan - destined for OT at Penn State, IMO...hoping Terrence Stephens gets on board
DE Sean Stanley and/or DE DeOnte' Arnett - would gladly take either one
LB Glenn Carson and/or LB Gerald Hodges and/or LB Dan Mason - figure Carson and Mason are the picks here, but we also have a good shot at Jelani Jenkins (LB/S)
CB Stephon Morris - solid not spectacular
CB Stephen Obeng-Agyapong - see above
CB Jordan Love - hoping...
S Malcolm Willis - solid not spectacular
S Abdul Smith - see above
I'd imagine Hodges give us a look and we woudl project him at safety initially.

I forgot Craig Crawford...not sure how I did that. Antone Exum from VA apparently has an offer, could see him at WR or CB and actually like him better as a CB but I don't know his interest level. Jason Ankrah the DE out of MD...Brent Caprio QB NJ, Andrew Shoop QB PA.
RB Tavon Austin, FB? Mike Marrow as well. I'm hopeful that we will get Austin although he will decide late so who knows...if Stephfon Green disappears in our offense this year we will probably have no shot at him, I ASSUME either way Jeremiah Young is probable in terms of getting a written offer.
It would be nice to know where Penn State stands with Pete White, the OT/OG out of MD...he would also be a nice addition. Maybe Nick Kindler at OT. Bottom line is there are a ton of prospects out there with interest in Penn State...if we don't fail miserably on offense we should grab our share, if we do fail miserably we will probably strike gold on D and be looking for WRs and a QB or two in December.
I'm hopeful that we get Jaleel Clark locked up sooner rather than later but could be questionable...think that might be close to being a done deal though. Not offering Craig Crawford has me baffled, hopefully he grabs an offer after 5-10-08 if he is planning on being there for the Nike camp...if not I still hope he gets one very, VERY soon.

I would be happy as hell at WR and LB and DL (if you get both Stanley and Arnet)... outside of that, this class would be an utter failure. Drake blows. PSU deserves and needs better. Alston isn't the answer either (he ain't coming to PSU to begin with). Tavon Austin better be the first RB in this class, otherwise - failure. Fine with Fontaine as the lone TE ... OL is ok. Secondary is full of athletic projects.

Forgot about Stephens...ironic since I added him to the PSU forum the other day. As for the other MD targets -
Hawkins: hard to get a read on him right now, but I'm guessing guessing elsewhere.
Jenkins: mentioning other schools more
Austin: PSU has a chance. I don't know what Illinois's offer board looks like, but Porzel likely committing to WVU will help.

Fine. I don't agree with you at all though, and I think he's going to have a big year now that his thumb has healed. His success and our style of offense are very appealing to recruits right now that want to play in a vertical passing scheme.

Jenkins has always been high on PSU. There have been two posts on the Rivals National board, one of them knows the kid personally, and he posted that Jenkins was BLOWN AWAY at PSU and leads. A Maryland poster also said PSU leads for Jenkins. Whether that is true or not, I have no idea ... but just because he mentions other schools more, I wouldn't go with the theory that Jenkins isn't going to PSU because he mentions other schools more. This could be a PSU v. UVA fight.
Austin - PSU has more than a chance. Not worried about Illinois at this time. WVU is the concern IMO and Porzel going there might be the final domino that lands Austin in State College.
