Ex-Dukes won't alter new schools' status

Penn State called Gateway coach Terry Smith before practice Tuesday and said it was offering scholarships to receiver-defensive back Corey Brown (6 feet 1, 185 pounds) and linebacker Dorian Bell (6-2, 215). Pitt, Ohio State, Michigan and Alabama already had offered scholarships to both.

"They both have about 12 offers already," Smith said.

Smith believes both Brown and Bell could be ranked among the top 50 players in the country next year.

The visiting Gators raced to a 17-0 first-quarter lead and coasted to a Big East victory against their longtime tormentors.

Gateway (5-1, 2-0), No. 3 in the WPIAL, lost to Woodland Hills by three touchdowns each of the past two seasons and trails in the series, 16-5.

Leon Green scored two touchdowns, on a 55-yard pass from Robert Kalkstein and an 11-yard run, and Cam Saddler had two 2-yard scoring runs for the Gators. Green had three catches for 81 yards, Corey Brown three for 93, and Kalkstein was 7 of 15 for 160 yards.

Isaac McKenzie ran 3 yards for a score for the Wolverines (1-5, 1-1). Teammate Joe Shaffo was 14 of 28 for 163 yards, but was intercepted twice.

• Penn State defensive coordinator Tom Bradley was at Seneca Valley High School on yesterday, chatting with coach Ron Butschle about C.J. Brown, one of the most highly regarded quarterbacks in the WPIAL's Class of 2009. If Bradley hung around long enough for the basketball game, he saw Brown help Seneca Valley upset Class AAAA No. 1 North Allegheny, 56-40.

• Some other highly touted juniors continue to draw big-time Division I interest. Gateway linebacker Dorian Bell and receiver Corey Brown have 30 and 25 offers, respectively. The duo recently picked up offers from California, Florida State and Louisville.

Wide receiver Corey Brown is one of the most talented prospects at his position in the Class of 2009 and the Monroeville (Pa.) Gateway junior already has an impressive offer list.

The first schools to offer Brown were Pitt, Rutgers and Akron, and in recent weeks that list has grown rapidly.

"I've got (offers from) Pitt, Rutgers, Penn State, Akron, Tennessee, Boston College, Virginia, Syracuse and West Virginia," Brown said recently. "They're all even for now."
