Ex-Dukes won't alter new schools' status

Penn State called Gateway coach Terry Smith before practice Tuesday and said it was offering scholarships to receiver-defensive back Corey Brown (6 feet 1, 185 pounds) and linebacker Dorian Bell (6-2, 215). Pitt, Ohio State, Michigan and Alabama already had offered scholarships to both.

"They both have about 12 offers already," Smith said.

Smith believes both Brown and Bell could be ranked among the top 50 players in the country next year.

Sitting alongside Gateway running back Cameron Saddler, Gateway junior linebacker Dorian Bell just watched, as if he was taking mental notes.

"Let Cameron go first," the 6-foot-1, 205-pound Bell said. "I'm new to this, so I'll watch him."

Bell was preparing for just his third interview with a reporter. This is, after all, new to him.

• Penn State defensive coordinator Tom Bradley was at Seneca Valley High School on yesterday, chatting with coach Ron Butschle about C.J. Brown, one of the most highly regarded quarterbacks in the WPIAL's Class of 2009. If Bradley hung around long enough for the basketball game, he saw Brown help Seneca Valley upset Class AAAA No. 1 North Allegheny, 56-40.

Bell and Brown each have more than 20 scholarship offers, not only drawing Pitt, Penn State and West Virginia but also Florida State, Miami, Michigan and Ohio State.
"Dorian Bell, measurable-wise, has everything," Scout.com recruiting analyst Bob Lichtenfels said. "He plays the game and doesn't talk or showboat, but every time you watch a game you see No. 25. His awareness is off the charts. He's always around the ball and seldom makes mistakes.
