Besides Cretin-Derham Hall 6-foot-7, 295-pound lineman Seantrel Henderson, the Gophers football team is recruiting juniors Beau Allen, a Minnetonka defensive tackle; Jimmy Gjere, an Irondale offensive tackle; and LaMonte Edwards, a Woodbury linebacker.

Gjere is 6-7, 285 pounds and is a defenseman in hockey. Wearing skates, he's nearly 7 feet tall.

North spotlight: Irondale's Gjere kind of a big deal on skates

Quote:
Irondale's Jimmy Gjere, at 6-7 and 285 pounds, probably is the biggest prep hockey player ever in Minnesota.

By DAVID La VAQUE, Star Tribune
Last update: February 11, 2009 - 7:22 AM

Heads turn when Jimmy Gjere walks into the arena carrying sticks taller than his Irondale hockey teammates. Jaws drop when he takes the ice on size 15 skates. And when the 6-7, 285-pound defenseman proves he can actually skate?

"I think that's when people say, 'Wow, he's not some big, slow guy,' " Gjere said.

But he is, most likely, the largest player in the history of Minnesota prep hockey. He would be imposing at any level. Former Edina High School athlete Joe Finley, a senior at North Dakota, measures 6-7 and 245 pounds. Wild enforcer Derek Boogaard stands 6-8, but at 257 pounds, even he gives up size to Gjere.

Just a junior this season, Gjere (pronounced Jerry) is indeed a football player on skates. He anchored the Knights offensive line from his position at right guard and has received interest from the Gophers, Wisconsin, Iowa and Ohio State.

"Ohio State sent something in the mail," Gjere said. "And Dick Tressel stopped by our school and talked to my football coach. But they haven't offered a scholarship."

From the Minny site. Minnesota and Wisconsin have offered, while most of the Big Ten has been in contact. Jimmy camped at Iowa last weekend, and had a good time.
